We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Becky Allen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Becky below.
Becky, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I always laugh when I get this question, “what made you decide to start your own practice?” Well, the truth is, I never knew I wanted to be a business owner. In fact, I always said I WOULDN’T go into private practice! But, when you’re meant to do something, there is no stopping it.
During my second pregnancy and early postpartum experience, my midwife would tell me at each appointment about a new wellness collective she was going to be starting in the Fall of 2019. It would be a group of like-minded, holistic wellness practitioners including midwifery, chiropractic, lactation, massage therapy, and pelvic floor therapy. She brought up the idea each visit I had with her of me being the Pelvic Floor Therapist, but there was a “catch…” I would need to be under my own LLC rather than employed or contracted by her practice.
Hmm. Me, start a busines?! No way… but the idea continued to grow on me at each appointment I had with her. Fast forward to January 2019, at my final postpartum visit with her, and she brought it up again. Nothing new, I thought, we can dream! That evening I received an email from my Physical Therapy School alma mater regarding their Certificate program in women’s health Physical Therapy. Huh… Now that was an intriguing coincidence!
That night I emailed the program back requesting more info, and the rest is history! I started the year long program to specialize in Women’s Health and Pelvic Health, launched my practice Genesis PT & Wellness PLLC, joined the Wellness Team at Modern Midwifery, all by the end of 2019.
Today, Summer 2022, I have 15 employees, including 11 therapists and 4 admins that make up Genesis. I am now in the role of Founder/CEO, and no longer see patients as I am solely running and growing the business. I have also started a second business, The Pelvic Powerhouse LLC, where I offer courses and coaching currently for other Pelvic Floor Therapists and practice owners!
Looking back, I feel that a large part of my early success was joining a like minded wellness team in the beginning. We all referred to one another, which was helpful in building my initial patient caseload. I also have always been extremely active on my social media to bring awareness to the field of Pelvic Health as well as use that platform to market our services to the Dallas Fort Worth area.
My biggest piece of advice to any young professional looking to start a business is to bet on yourself. Don’t doubt your ability to make a difference in something you are burning with passion for. Truly, if you believe in something, go out and do it. Bet on yourself, and fake it ’till you make it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Genesis PT & Wellness is a DFW based Pelvic Floor Therapy practice where we help men, women, and children with issues related to the pelvis and pelvic floor muscles! This can include symptoms such as pain or discomfort during pregnancy, postpartum/c section recovery, diastasis recti, incontinence of bladder or bowels, chronic constipation, pelvic organ prolapse, painful intercourse, sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction, pre and post prostatectomy, female infertility and cycle optimization, pelvic pain, endometriosis related pain, SIJ/hip/low back pain, sciatica, potty training struggles and day or nighttime accidents for kiddos (and more!). Our mission is to help our patients live their best lives without pain or dysfunction, and to spread the knowledge that you do not have to live with any of the above symptoms.
We are set apart when it comes to Pelvic Floor Therapy, as we are a holistic practice that truly takes the whole person into account. We are assessing the physical wellbeing of our patients, but also their emotional and mental wellbeing. We understand that we cannot separate the three if we want to help our patients get to the root cause of their symptoms and to truly heal.
We utilize a movement based approach to recovery, as we are movement experts who fully understand how the body is all interconnected and how it works together. We never fixate on the pelvic floor alone in our treatment, but instead we utilize breathing techniques, posture, movement, and strength training to help our patients heal. And we have a blast doing it!
I am extremely proud of the team I have built, and the quality of care we bring to our patients. We are able to give each and every patient an hour, at minimum, of 1 on 1 time each and every session. We provide a fun, safe space for our patients to comfortably heal. The approach we take to treating the pelvis and pelvic floor is evidence based, and works quickly to resolve our patients’ issues.
We truly love what we do, and it shows!
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My team and our work culture is something I am extremely proud of at Genesis! My advice is to create an environment that you yourself would love to be employed at, pay your people well., and put your employees first.
In a world that tends to teach us that “I am the most important,” and to put ME first, I say no. Flip it. Your business is only as strong as the team. When you place the needs of your employees FIRST, everything else will fall into place. When you make it to the top (and you will), you will look around and see your team with you, cheering you on. But if you step on everyone on your way to the top (if you even make it), you’ll look around and see no one.
They say it’s lonely at the top, but I say it’s only lonely if you get there alone.
Treat your people like you’d want to be treated. Have fun. Splurge on work events. Create a team that no one wants to leave, and watch your business soar!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Instagram! I am ALL over Instagram, pretty much daily! I have fun, provide valuable and applicable content, and I am always myself. People who follow @genesisptwellness on Instagram know what type of environment they’ll be in, and what caliber of care they will receive before they ever step foot in our doors! I dance, joke, make people laugh, all in the name of changing the pelvic health game. I am all in when it comes to Instagram, and this has been a major way I have made a name for my own reputation, as well as that of Genesis!
