We were lucky to catch up with Becky Abplanalp recently and have shared our conversation below.
Becky, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Being a business owner, is so much more stressful than I had anticipated, but also so rewarding. Building homes during Covid and Post-covid has been extremely challenging due to rising cost in material and labor. It was very stressful to navigate. There was once or twice, I had the thought, “I’d sure sleep better, if I had a regular paying job.” That thought was easy to push aside, because I love being a business owner. I love watching my company grow. I love to set goals and my team to accomplish those goals.
Our company has really grown the past year and we’ve been able to bring on a few new team members, which has been rewarding.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
From the time I was small, my father built a few homes and I remember multiple times, my parents remodeling. I’m sure that’s where it all started. When Mike and I married, we purchased our first home, remodeled and flipped it. We did that multiple times. We then turned to new construction, and our love for building custom homes, took off from there.
We are a true custom home builder, from the $500k home to the over $2M homes. We work closely with our clients in every phase of construction. We start from helping them design their dream home, creating a functional space for their family and then helping them all along the way, with every selection for their home.
We utilize the best Sub-contractors in the industry. We cater to those clients wanting a home built with the highest standards and deliver a quality product. It’s cliche, but we ‘Build every home, as if it’s our very own.’
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
Mike and I were working hard to complete our first home that we were entering in the ‘Parade of Homes’. The home wasn’t sold yet, so we were also stressing out about that. We were there working one evening, and I was near the front door and a car drove by very slowly, looking at the home.
I walked out on to the front porch and motioned for them to come in. They stopped, confused and rolled their window down. I let them know, they are more than welcome to come in and take a look at the home. They fell in love with it and purchased it.
I’m not normally an aggressive person by nature, but they laughed at me flagging them down and being so forthright.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
This year we set the goal to have three homes in the Parade of Homes. With all of the supply chain issues going on in our country, it’s very difficult to finish one home for a Parade. We knew this was going to be a very lofty goal.
Our team worked so hard, as did our Sub-contractors. We worked overtime and into the wee hours the night before, but finished all three homes.
Our homes were in different catagories and each won an award. One took Gold, another Silver and the third home Bronze.
