We recently connected with Becka Payne and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Becka, thanks for joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Yes, absolutely! Vacations (and rest) help with productivity and motivation. Whether it’s a quick weekend trip away or a full vacation for a week, I always feel more ready to work when I return. A huge part of my role as a sleep consultant, is coaching parents to rest — we all need it. None of us function at our full potential if we’re always “grinding.”
My advice to other entrepreneurs is to remember that the work will still be there when you get back! We are actually our most productive after a break. And it’s time to change the idea of a hustle culture. Taking care of ourselves and letting ourselves relax is just as important than working hard.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My current job title (and the most favorite I’ve held) is Pediatric Sleep Specialist. I work with families one-on-one, on a daily basis, to teach their kids independent sleep skills.
I‘m certified to work with kids 12 years old and younger, including prenatal education sessions. My sleep packages are customized to each individual child/family and because of the personalization, we typically see results much faster than Google’s approach. And I work with families worldwide!
I recently was awarded second place for Northern Colorado’s best lifestyle coach. I was also a finalist for best home-based business for my local Chamber of Commerce.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth (and social media) and past client referrals are the best sources of new clients for me. Most of the families that find me, know someone you knows me and/or has worked with me in the past. I also have worked with many families who have been referred to me by other professionals in the birth/postpartum/mom-support world, like lactation specialist, doulas, and midwives.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started with Sleeper Teachers while still running a full time in-home daycare. I was able to coach my clients in the “nooks and crannies” of my day while taking care of 6 kids, 5 and under. Being able to start as a sleep consultant while still having my stable income was a lot of hard work, but it allowed to be build a client base and led me to where I am today — a full time mom and sleep specialist. Plus, it gave me the freedom to add on night nanny services to my packages for the families that are interested in overnight support.
