We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Becca Tetzlaff. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Becca below.
Becca, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I actually find that a LOT of people that are interested in wellness, clean beauty, and an organic lifestyle have a similar origin story to mine: a health scare or health issue usually fuels the interest!
For me, it was acne and hormonal imbalances. Most of us just assume that acne is a right of passage as a teenager, but after struggling with it on and off (even into my adult life), I was over it! Topical creams and “miracle products” just weren’t cutting it for me. Long story short, it led me to dig deeper and find the root cause of my health issues. I began doing research and discovered that my body was signaling to me that something was wrong!
It REALLY opened my eyes! My acne was stemming from gut issues, hormonal imbalances, and foods I was consuming. I also learned how little regulation there is when it comes to the ingredients in beauty and personal care products (it’s shocking). Almost everything I was doing was unhealthy and a burden on my body.
I began to eat organic, whole foods. Switched to natural beauty products. Became aware of the products I was using around my house. It was a snowball effect and I was constantly trying to find ways I could do better to improve my health and use less toxic products.
Sure enough, my skin cleared up and I felt amazing!
I had been sharing my experience and all of my newly-learned information with friends and family. It was so fun for me and something that I felt so passionate about, that I decided to start a blog to share with the world!
At the end of the day, I aim to educate and empower women so that they can also feel confident about the products they use for themselves and their families and lead holistic lifestyles!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I run the blog “Organically Becca” which educates all about clean beauty, natural skincare, holistic living, and ways you can be more conscious about the products you use.
The blog is multi-faceted and has something for everyone! I do honest product reviews, tutorials, and share “clean swaps” for conventional products. I also have digital ebooks where people can learn more about ingredients and how to get started with using natural products.
If people want more one-on-one custom help, I also offer consultations! This is much more personalized and I can give people tailored recommendations for natural products based on their budget, preferences, skin type, etc. It’s super fun!
My goal is always to make it easy and stress-free for those looking to use less toxic products!
I also don’t believe in perfection – we NEED balance in our lives! I do NOT strive to live a 100% pure non-toxic life and don’t expect others to either. It’s about slowly making positive changes here and there when you can and not stressing about perfection.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I wish I had some magic formula that would guarantee growth on social media, but honestly, I think it just takes TIME and you need to be yourself! I started in 2016 and it was definitely a slow trickle. I don’t think there has necessarily been just one thing I’ve done that has led to growth. It’s a combination of a couple of things:
1) Posting content regularly. It doesn’t have to be daily, but at least a few times a week! Whether that’s posting on your Instagram feed or showing up on stories informally.
2) Engaging with your audience is HUGE! You absolutely need to have a sense of community. Respond to messages and comments. Get to know people and be helpful to them. Find others with similar interests. Be nice!
3) Be personable and let people know who you are! For me, I really wouldn’t be able to do what I do if it weren’t for readers that trusted my opinion. Also, I’ve definitely followed other accounts where you never see the owner’s face or get to know them on a deeper level – and it just feels a bit disconnected. It makes such a huge difference when you feel like you know the person!
4) Have a strategy and don’t just post for the sake of posting. You need to offer valuable content that people want to share! My account always sees the most growth when people share my content or my Instagram page with others.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes! I started my blog as a side hobby and had zero intention of making it a full-time job. I was working a corporate job as a digital designer and the corporate world was honestly just draining to me. I began to want to pursue my blog and business more but was not ready to financially make the jump.
Thankfully I have a very supportive husband that encouraged me to take the leap. He saw how miserable I was at my corporate job and how much passion I had for my blog.
Ultimately, I left my corporate job but have been working a part-time job remotely for the past three years. It has been a nice balance of having the freedom to build my business but also having some financial security on the side.
And just recently, I also left my part-time job. So I am now working full-time on my blog! It’s a bit scary but I am so excited to finally dive in full force.
I think everyone’s journey will look different in this aspect! You have to listen to what feels right for you and it will all work out eventually.
