We recently connected with Becca Leigh and have shared our conversation below.
Becca, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I believe that stories have a lot of power. They can promote empathy, let someone feel less alone in the world, be a fun escape, help people see from another’s perspective, and give hope. These are all things I believe strongly in, and it means a lot that I get to help make them happen through my work. I’m helping authors find the truest version of their story and write that book. I want to live in a world that’s kind, empathetic, and full of wonder. I also know what it’s like to be a writer and all the doubts and challenges that come with that, and I love that I get to support other writers through that. My favorite moments are when their eyes light up with excitement or I can literally see their confidence return. It’s so wonderful!
Becca, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a book coach and developmental editor who specializes in fantasy, science fiction, fairytale retellings, and speculative fiction. I got into this industry while looking to move from being a piano teacher to something I could do online while utilizing my passion and skills. I’ve always loved reading and have been immersed in the writing world since I was a teenager. But I didn’t know book coaches were a thing until my best friend, who’s also a fiction editor, told me during one of our story-analyzation discussions that I would make an amazing book coach and should check it out. I found a course designed for fiction book coaches and discovered I love this work!
As a book coach and editor, I help my authors develop and refine things on a story level (so I’m looking at content, not grammar or punctuation). I believe that everything’s connected to character, so I analyze each story through that lens. The character and their arc of change are what give meaning and life to the story. And I like to ask my authors questions instead of telling them what to do. They’re the god of their story and the brilliant solution is always in their head. It’s just a matter of asking the right questions to help them uncover it.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Truly connecting with my audience on Instagram and forging relationships. I want them to know they can trust me with their book. This is something they’ve put so much time and heart into, and it’s often the embodiment of their dreams. So I do my best to show the real me on social media as well as my values and beliefs. Plus, I love sharing tips and ideas in posts so they can get a feel for what it’s like to work with me and see if we’re an excellent fit as an author and book coach team.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
We have the privilege of impacting the world, both on big levels and individual levels. Even if we bring light or hope to one person’s day, it’s all worth it. And everything’s connected, so putting more hope and beauty into the world can have more of an effect than we even realize.
