We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Becca Kannapell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Becca below.
Becca, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I was working full time in a hospital as an Occupational Therapist in New York City. I was nearing my thirtieth birthday when I began experiencing “undiagnosable” physical and medical symptoms. Luckily I had incredible health insurance from working in healthcare at the time and I was able to see medical expert, one after the next to try and pinpoint what was happening to my body. As I was becoming an expert on trying to heal, I began slipping into a low-level-but-still-functioning-somewhat depression. It was during this time I had gone home for a holiday weekend and found in the basement of my mom’s home an old necklace full of pink chalcedony crystals. For lack of a better word, the necklace “sparked major joy.” The piece was so full of life and color and vibrancy, I felt hope. I took the necklace upstairs and asked my mom “where did this come from?!?” She responded, “I made that years ago.” That was the moment I decided that we would start a jewelry company.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
POUND Jewelry is a jewelry company that seeks to mark moments of transformation in people’s lives through the art of adornment. Interwoven into the framework of our company is ritual, magic, intuitive design and channeling the potent healing of crystals, stones, gems and ancient relics. My mom had always made jewelry for my sister and I when we were growing up. She made necklaces and bracelets for our friends to mark birthdays and celebrations. She created magic to be worn like tiaras for our necks for proms, dance recitals and momentous occasions. Our company started the day I found the pink necklace in the basement, but the energy of POUND has been alive in the veins of our family since I can remember.
I have a background in healthcare, wellness and a passion to write the words my soul speaks. My sister is a photographer, artist, massage therapist and an overall creative in a million ways. Our mother has a background of a heart of gold. She is a creator, an advisor, a profoundly caring and loving mother. The three of us have co-created a way to bring POUND into the world to share with our fellow mystics and friends.
We co-create powerful jewelry pieces that serve to remind us of our magic. Each necklace, bracelet, earring is choreographed and handmade by us and Mother Earth. The fact that the three of us are family and friends AND business partners is what I am most proud of. It ain’t a walk in the park all of the time, ha. But most of the time it is potent and it is one hundred percent a passion project that brings to the light the importance of feeling epic in what we put on our bodies as strength-builders, symbols of hope and talismans of love.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When POUND Jewelry was born, we were so lucky to have such as large community of humans who loved what we were creating. Women from a variety of backgrounds; some in fashion, the wellness world, creators and artists, CEO’s of large companies, writers, empowerment leaders, design experts, just to name a few, came bubbling to the surface to be of service in our pursuit to launch our business. We received so much assistance at every turn and in every facet of our business, it is hard to even imagine at times how we have been so blessed. Along with this amount of support, we also received advice to turn away from the essence of POUND and in order to move closer to what was deemed acceptable by common retailers and the jewelry industry at large. We were advised not to be too “woo-woo” or “weird.” To keep the “spiritual talk” to a minimum. Mostly because I am a people pleaser and someone who in the past relished in conforming to “social norms”, I tried to move us in a non-spirit-based direction. But what was trying to come through was full of spirit. And so, the spirit of POUND won.
At the heart of POUND is the essence of a spirit that is here to push us to listen more deeply to what is true for us. And what was true for us was to allow ourselves to break from the structure of what our necklaces “looked” like and create from the place inside of us that knows what we want jewelry to “feel” like. To this day, we create beauty based on what the stones ask of us and how they wish to be woven together for maximum energetic resonance.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our mission is to remind people (and ourselves, over and over) that magic is always present. Sometimes we just need the reminder, sometimes we have to look for it. Adornment is an art. Our bodies are temple vessels. When we decorate ourselves with items that are full of love, magic and beauty, we often step more fully into our presence, which is important to share with the world. We hope our pieces mark moments of evolution in people’s lives. Some of those moments are full of bliss, some of them are full of pain and struggle. All of the moments, no matter what their flavors are, accumulate to make us who we are today. Jewelry, for thousands upon thousands of years, has served as symbols of birth, death, and re-birth.
Our pieces do the same.
