We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Becca Hofmann a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Becca, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
Hands down, the most transformative investment I made in my business was to have brand photography taken for my own brand. Unfortunately, I HATED the experience and the resulting images I received. The entire experience was awful – nonexistent communication, constant interruptions during our session, and a clear lack of planning.
But, I learned exactly how I wanted to run my business and treat my clients! I want my clients to feel values. I want them to know that the person and company they trusted is as invested in their success as they are. And I want them to know that effort was put forth to make the day a resounding success.
Until that day, I didn’t fully understand what it was like to be on the other side of the camera. It can be a very vulnerable place. I appreciate that now, it’s why this awful experience was the best investment I have ever made. It has shaped who I am and the business I run today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Photography was a creative outlet I used when I felt lost and stuck at my previous career. I was looking for a sense of fulfillment, joy, and creativity. I photographed anything I could: nature, newborns, weddings, etc. You name it, I likely photographed it.
But then I was asked to photograph for a business, and it was like a lightbulb turned on inside me. I could use my creativity and skills to help people’s dreams become a reality!
The brand photography business grew. But a common theme I started to see was a lack of brand clarity for these business owners. We would create images that told the story of their business and stood out online, but without a clear brand strategy the images would be used to their full potential. So the business grew to add on brand strategy in conjunction with photography.
It goes back to helping as much as possible. Now BH Brand Co. can give clarity and confidence to businesses by crafting an intentional brand and then supplying that brand with bold and stunning images!
Images they can use to change the lives of their customers. Hopefully making the world a better place, one thriving brand at a time. You know branding – but badass.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being in the brand building industry we are really in the people industry. We get to meet passionate entrepreneurs all the time. People who are looking to make the world a better place, help as many people as possible, and create a life full of wonder and excitement. Getting to connect with these bold, brilliant, and badass entrepreneurs is the greatest reward. We lift each other up, inspire each other, and create an unstoppable force.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
There is no limit. There is no limit in the amount of joy, the amount of help, the amount of impact, the amount of freedom you can get from being a creative entrepreneur. You are limited only by your beliefs. If you have been told your entire career that you aren’t ready for the next level then that is what you will feel, but if you believe that you are capable of more, you will be. Your creativity is your power.
