Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Becca Alvarado Artist. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Becca Alvarado thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on thus far happened recently at a little venue in downtown called The Living Room. A good friend of mine known as KeiRock, another artist of many hats, asked me earlier in the summer to take the stage as a solo poet for his Poetry Diet event- the Tiny Desk of Poetry if you will. Initially I had to postpone the original show’s date in August due to my mother getting sick which fueled my insecurities; I was mentally or emotionally not ready. I’m so honored to have an individual like Kei who believes in my work so much so, he provided the grace and understanding to give me time to prepare. We finally settled on a date on October 6th, 2024.
My mother was in the room that night along with some of my dearest friends who are the same individuals who inspire me to keep breathing. It was for them. And if you are reading this, it was for you too.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who don’t know me, my name is Becca Alvarado. I am an actor and a poet currently living in Los Angeles with roots in Arizona.
Acting and poetry has always weaved in and out of my life. Both started off as an outlet-hobby because who would pursue arts as a career? Especially as an indigenous Latina? That’s crazy talk. But if there was anyone who pushed me into the arts, it’d have to be my parents. The first type of art form that caused the first spark was music.
My dad was a trumpeter. He was even in a mariachi band in the small town of Globe, Arizona he grew up in, I think called the Brass Grasshoppers. Something like that. His love for music was inspiring. The way he would close his eyes, his head and foot nodding to the tempo. He would listen to the real Oldies like the Temptations, the Penguins, Sam Cooke and Ben E. King just to name a few. My mom, although didn’t come from a music background, to this day immerses herself with Frank Sinatra and vintage French music.
My mother was proactive involving us in folklorico and in a non-profit organization called Rosie’s House, a free after school program for low income families. During those blissful years, I learned to play the flute, the piano, and even sung in an opera choir. In the midst of this, I was (and still is) a huge book worm. I made it a rule to carry a book with me in case I had time to read- I still do this. From fiction to non-fiction you name it, I wanted to read it. It wasn’t long before I wanted to write a book. Even as a little girl I loved writing stories. A family friend introduced me to poetry and the rest is history.
Poetry has always been a hobby of mine I come to when I’m feeling stuck. A way to let my emotions breathe and think for themselves without being diluted from societal standards. I utilize this feeing in my acting. Emotional Freedom. It takes courage to be human.
I witnessed this same courage in a production of Child’s Play. It was a small production that my middle school had for us. Actors doing and saying things that made me laugh, made me cry. Performers that made the whole room silent to watch what was happening in from them, allowing the teachers to forget even for a second the lessons that needed to be taught For the students the homework that would soon be due tomorrow. A sense of peace. It all clicked then, that that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. To be and provide peace along bringing emotional conversations to the table.
Fast-forward to present day, I’m rolling with the entertainment tide, booking a job here and there, helping other artists with their projects, and now on the final stretch of finishing my illustrations for my poetry book.
With that, I am proud of the current place I am in. I am where God needs me to be. He is teaching me the comforts of patience but that is something that will be a lifelong battle.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Like most of us, life has had its ups and downs. I often reflect upon those moments, more with the thoughts of, “If I made it out of that, I can make it through this.” That mantra has been my driving force, pushing myself back up even when I am tired. Even if my fridge may be empty, even if men have used and bruised my body and my heart, even if I had no bed to call my own, for some reason or another life was and will always still be beautiful. My curiosity of understanding this world we live in has kept me alive, because I want to do more, I want to see more, I want to be more.
If you are reading this and you feel like giving up, pause. You have accomplished more than you think and there is someone out there whom you are inspiring to keep going. So why would you give up now just because you’re a little broken? Being broken is what makes you different and being different is beautiful.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Emotions. As an actor, I always find it interesting to see scripts with dialogue between two characters who have some type of conflict. Whether it be out of anger, a passionate love story or maybe your favorite character is suddenly killed off, we are often moved with those emotions to feel. But how often do we find ourselves feeling moved like that in real life? How often do we have those hard conversations? When was the last time you told your friends how much they mean to you? I’m sure on the receiving end it may be awkward, but with time that builds the foundation to normalize conversations that are peppered with emotions. This allows us to see the gears and the mechanisms inside of us allowing our loved ones to have a better understanding of us. This provides empathy which is lacked in our society. How easy we turn our eyes away to violence happening not just across seas, but across your street .
Emotions are the bridge that connects us. That’s what makes us stand out amongst the animal kingdom. So maybe write that book you’ve been thinking about. Have a Bob Ross painting party. Write a poem, add a beat to it like Dr. Dre. It takes courage to be a creative. Because not everyone is doing it like you. Most are trying to be like someone else. Call me crazy. Call me weird. At least I know I’m me.
