We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Becca a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi BECCA, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first recognized my desire to pursue a professional creative path at the age of nine. During this formative period, I found myself drawn to the piano at my grandmother’s house, where I would play simple melodies. This early exposure to music ignited a profound sense of joy and purpose within me. It became clear that music was more than just an activity; it was a calling.
By the time I was fifteen, I was committed to turning this passion into a career. I began collaborating with experienced songwriters and producers, which provided me with invaluable industry insights and opportunities. Working with professionals who had previously collaborated with global artists, such as BTS, further validated my decision to focus on music. This combination of early inspiration and professional experience has been instrumental in shaping my career and reaffirming my dedication to the arts.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m BECCA, a Salvadoran singer, songwriter, and music producer dedicated to highlighting Central American culture through my art. My journey into the music industry began at a young age, with a deep passion for music nurtured during my childhood. By age fifteen, I was already collaborating with songwriters and producers, gaining industry experience that shaped my career trajectory.
My work primarily focuses on creating music that merges Salvadoran influences with contemporary sounds, specifically in the genres of funk, disco, and retro-pop groove. My debut EP, Salvadoran Queen, is a testament to this blend, showcasing tracks that celebrate Salvadoran heritage while integrating modern funk and disco rhythms. Through my music, I aim to address the lack of Central American representation in the arts and empower women in the industry.
What sets me apart is my commitment to authenticity and cultural representation. I believe in creating art that not only entertains but also educates and inspires. My brand is built on the idea of embracing and showcasing Salvadoran culture, with a distinctive sound that combines vibrant grooves with meaningful storytelling.
One of my proudest achievements is the release of Salvadoran Queen, which has garnered positive responses and significant engagement. Additionally, I’m dedicated to giving back to the community by supporting Salvadoran artists and providing scholarships to young talents through my brand’s initiatives.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my work is a reflection of my deep-rooted passion for music and cultural representation. I strive to create meaningful, impactful art that resonates with diverse audiences while advocating for greater representation and support for Salvadoran artists. My mission is to use my platform to make a difference and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Salvadoran communities.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by a mission to achieve mainstream representation for Central American artists. Growing up, I noticed a significant lack of visibility for Salvadoran and broader Central American artists in the music industry. This gap inspired me to use my platform to highlight and celebrate Salvadoran culture through my work.
One of my primary goals is to break through the barriers and establish a more inclusive presence for Central American artists on the global stage. I envision a future where Salvadoran music and artists receive the recognition they deserve and one day, it would be an incredible honor to earn a Grammy as a Salvadoran artist. Such an achievement would not only be a personal milestone but also a testament to the rich cultural contributions of Central American artists in the global music landscape.
By pursuing this mission, I hope to pave the way for greater representation, inspire emerging artists from my region, and contribute to a more diverse and inclusive music industry.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
One aspect of my journey that non-creatives might struggle to understand is the difference between signed and independent artists, and why supporting independent artists is crucial.
Signed artists typically work with major record labels, which can provide significant resources, including funding, marketing, and distribution. However, this often comes with a loss of creative control and a portion of their earnings. In contrast, independent artists like myself manage our own careers, which means we retain full creative control but face challenges like limited resources and greater financial risk.
Supporting independent artists is vital because we are the ones taking on these challenges to bring unique and diverse voices to the forefront. Without the backing of major labels, we rely on grassroots support from our communities and fans. This support not only helps us to continue creating and sharing our art but also ensures that a broader range of voices and stories are represented in the industry.
Understanding this distinction can foster greater appreciation for the dedication and effort required to be an independent artist and highlight the importance of grassroots support in nurturing and sustaining diverse artistic expression.
