We were lucky to catch up with Bebe Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Bebe thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I definitely give the credit to my mother- she was the one who gave me the idea of expanding on my own and starting a business. At the time, I was leaving a lash studio and going back to doing men’s hair. I had already fell in love with eyelash extensions, so I was expressing to my mother how I miss doing lashes. At first I started doing house calls and going to my few clients that I had. Eventually the driving was taking up a lot of time, so my mother gave me the idea of renting a small space and working out of there.
Shortly, I rented out a small office space in a building near the Mall of America. I thought the location was very central to building/gaining new clients.
A year in, and I am ready to move onto renting my own salon suite! I then knew this was definitely a worthwhile endeavor. I absolutely loved what I was doing, business was growing rapidly, and I was happy! This was all working for me; I was making great connections, gaining loyal clients that would eventually follow me anywhere I went, and most of all I was able to adjust my schedule to my needs as well as my kids needs.
I’d like to say my customer service skills and skills in my lashing techniques has my clients coming back! I am very detailed and take pride in my work.
Bebe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Bebe, and I am a cosmetologist. I started out in the industry providing hair and makeup services. A couple years in, I started to grow an interest in eyelash extensions. I fell in love once I learned the craft and it’s been all about lashes ever since!
I have always been a very free spirit, and this whole business venture is so different and exciting for me! Im winging it, I don’t really have any detailed map of everything that I do. One thing I’ve learned along the way is to be much more disciplined about money management.
My clients know I am very different in the way I approach life. My customer service skills and personal connection will keep you coming back! I love to build a relationship, and I am always learning. One thing I would like my future clients to know is I want to fix the problem! If there’s ever an issue, I am always willing to fix or try new approaches to things. I love to do custom sets for each person because everyone is different.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
“The customer is always right.”
Along these years, I have learned to set boundaries and put myself first.
I use to be such a people pleaser and it got me into tough situations. I set my standards and would fall back on my own self at times, just to make a customer happy. It would lead me to feeling overwhelmed and burnt out from working. I have learned that not everyone has a great heart and good intentions.
There have been times where I would be lenient on my policies, causing more stress on myself and on other clients, which isn’t right. Setting boundaries and following through on it is the best way to keep things regulated. Of course there are emergencies that happen in life, but for the most part this is what keeps work in order.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth!
I have marketed on many different social media platforms, and the best way by far is word of mouth! I’d say at least 80% of my new clients are from word of mouth.
I’ve had new clients come in telling me they’ve heard about me from multiple people, and some even waiting months-years before they make their first appointment. They tell me stories about the experience that others have had here: from the lit up diffuser blowing relaxing essential oils into the air, to the the dim comfortable lights in the room, to even the cozy blanket and relaxing 90s r&b music playing in the background. It’s all about the experience! Naps are complimentary with each service ;)
