We recently connected with Beau Ward and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Beau, thanks for joining us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
I performed a personalized poem for Real Housewives of Potomac’s Candiace Dillard for her bridal shower. I was nervous and excited at the same time. This was my first paid gig and to perform in front of a celebrity was even better. She was so down to Earth. They made sure I had everything I needed. It was was a really good experience.
Beau, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always tell people that I am a little ole country boy from a small town called Indian Springs, Ga. When I was younger I wanted to be a hip hop artists but being from a small town those types of thoughts were not looked at as realistic. So years and years later, I started writing poetry and posting the pieces on social media, people would write really encouraging comments and I would get tons of likes. That’s one of the ways I was hired to perform for Candiace Dillard. I host events ( open and closed mics), I perform and speak at social and private events. I pray that my poetry touches at least one person at every event. I proud that The Most High God chose to make me a poet. My Speak Yo Piece,LLC is not just a brand but it’s truly a voice for the arts.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to learn that my poetry writing was not a gift for the world, so to speak but in turn a gift from God to me, to share with the world. That lesson helped me to understand, that everyone in an audience may not like what I speak but the intent may have only been for one particular person to hear it. So, I know as I write for me, that somewhere on this Earth, I am writing for someone else as well, who is not able to express themselves through poetry.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to inspire as many people as possible through my poetry and my small inspirational book “Beautiful Me”. And, along the journey build enough wealth for generations to come.
