We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Beau Jennings a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Beau, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I taught myself pretty much everything from watching my friends write songs, start bands, book shows, and make and release their own records. I kind of reject the idea of speeding up the process, as if there was some financial metric I needed to hit to make it worth it, it’s a lifelong pursuit. Being open and flexible while staying true to what your values are were probably the most essential skills.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve always been creative and that’s manifested itself in different ways throughout my life. As a kid I loved to draw and write my own comic books. In high school I learned to play guitar and in college started a band. I also studied architecture in college, and I always figured one day I’d have to give up one or the other. I never did give up either and I’ve found through the years they’ve informed each other and made me better in each pursuit. So far I’ve been able to continue to do both in meaningful ways and while it’s a little bit untraditional – a lot of people I know only do one thing or the other – I hope I can show people, and my kids especially – that you can be interested in and be successful and many things in life.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think my creative journey is really just a way to make sense of and document my overall life journey – I see them as intertwined. My main goal is to stay true to the creative instinct because I think everything else in life can flow from that.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is creating something that you can share with others and communication ideas that wouldn’t otherwise be communicated. A painting or poem or a song can share an idea in a way that only those mediums can do.
