We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Beatriz Fox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Beatriz below.
Beatriz , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you manage your own social media?
Currently, I manage my own social media because I am still fairly new to the business and it is more cost effective to do so. I do see the benefits of having a company manage it, and hope to begin putting together a team for my continued success.
For others who may be wondering whether they should manage their own social media or not, it really comes down to your budget. The more people you have working for you, the further you will go (and quicker!)
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello,
My name is Beatriz and I am an on-the-go adventurer based in San Diego, CA. In my free time, I enjoy an intense spin class, rejuvenating at the spa, bonding with family + friends and traveling to places unseen! I am passionate about luxurious fashion, anti-aging, contemporary living and I strive for holistic health, but am a foodie at heart so I still allow myself one cheat day per week.
Towards the latter part of 2020, during the COVID-19 outbreak, I relocated from Rhode Island to California. It was at this time that I became active on TikTok. I worked up from creating one to (up to) five TikTok’s per day, which was not as easy (for me) as it may seem, given I had a very full and busy life. However, it was during this time that I became more familiar with content creation for social media. I was invited to participate in TikToks Creator Marketplace and began joining other platforms for Content a creation. Finding my niche was the most difficult part for me, having so many varied interests.
Currently, I work 7 days a week, putting in many long hours. I do most of my own photography, videography, editing and posting. While I do in home shoots, I also set time aside to find cool locations around San Diego, Los Angeles and everywhere in between. Occasionally, I travel out of state to make content, which is where I’m hoping to expand and grow towards.
I, primarily, create content for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, but also/sometimes (create content for) Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. In addition, I do a lot of User Generated Content (UGC) for various companies.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I graduated from Loyola Marymount’s School of Film and Television and also attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Because of my theatre background, I wanted to have a platform to memorize lines and perform. All was good until I did a lip sync from a show called Veep that was a satire on privileged feminism. The skit I did (a lip sync) was actually Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ voice talking about how “all” men were awful. I, personally, thought the skit was so incredibly ridiculous that “no one” would take it seriously. However, I was wrong and a group of young boys started making videos about me calling me a man hater. I tried (many times) to explain that this was a TV Show, not my voice, just a lip sync that literally hundreds of other women performed, but they did not care because it was making their TikTok pages blow up.
Hate breeds hate, I learned. It was at this moment that I, briefly, considered walking away from TikTok and Content Creation. It was my daughter who encouraged me with my own words, reminding me not to let the cruel words of others affect my passion.
* it was not simply that I could not handle the cruel words against me, but that the hate was beginning to be directed towards my kids and I was also getting threats on my life.
This was especially difficult to navigate through, but after contacting the police, TikTok and the FBI’s Internet Crimes Unit, TikTok took the posts down of the boys that set out to misrepresent me for their own five minutes of fame.
After going through this and getting back to my TikToks, this is actually when I began getting paid offers for Content Creation and the beginning of my new career was in motion. My advice to all of those struggling: simply do NOT give up, no matter what.
How did you build your audience on social media?
As far as building my audience, I make sure to answer every comment that I receive, which is another time consuming task, but I feel it is imperative to connect with my growing audience. I also seek out others with pages like mine who are at my level or with larger audiences to connect with them for advice/tips on how to continue to grow.
Using hashtags effectively is a lot of research, but is another important way to connect with like-minded people.
Keeping your content consistent… this is something that I had a bit of trouble with. I tend to want to include everything on my social media, but people are not following me (yet) for * every little thing * that I do. It is totally important to know your niche. This is something I am still working on to hone down! Knowing your niche will guide you with what and how often to post, given your followers and audience demographics.
