We were lucky to catch up with BeatMonkey recently and have shared our conversation below.
BeatMonkey , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I’ve always had a passion for music as a kid. Around 13-14 I knew that’s what I wanted to do. This era is like late 90s early 2000s and equipment was very expensive back then. Things were just now starting to go digital. Once I graduated high school I should’ve taken it more serious and went all in on my craft but I chose the street life which is something that I regret to this very day. I encourage all the young creatives to get to work NOW and don’t procrastinate about it. If I would’ve taken it more seriously then I’d be further along in the industry rn. I would’ve learned the game earlier since back then you had to sign a deal in order to get seen/heard.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m 37 years of age. I’m from Gadsden Alabama (hr from Bham) I started making beats in like 99-2000. My mom bought me a Yamaha PSR keyboard (nothing major) and from there I learned how to make music. I used to record beats on cassette tapes and pass em out at school just for fun. Took music seriously in 2013 when me and my partner started BeatMonkey Productions. We had a studio were we provided beats and recording/mixing and that’s when I learned more about the business of music. What sets me apart from other creatives I would say is my life experiences and how I make music that evokes feeling and also because I’m literally a beatmonkey like will make anything although hip hop and RnB are the main focus of production. The brand is a stand out since NOBODY has ever referred to themselves as a BeatMonkey until we started. The name speaks for itself. I’m proud of myself that I actually took the steps to go forward with my music journey. A lot of people are afraid to try what they love and I’m blessed that I found my way back to the music. I want the people to know my brand just like a household item. I’m no better than the next man and that’s what I stand on integrity, trust, loyalty etc.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes. Where I’m from, most black men don’t make it out. Succumbing to street life, drugs and incarceration. I have a 13 year old and I’m getting older so my timeline isn’t to be wasted on things that serve me no purpose. My main objective in this industry is to set my mark and make a stain in the game that will provide the way out for my family for generations.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to express myself in ways I see fit. When I open that DAW it’s like a painter to an empty canvas. It’s very therapeutic for me to create somn from nothing (or recreate). Also when people acknowledge my skill set and it helps them out in some capacity of their life. Plus my daughter thinks it’s cool which is a plus for me.
