We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Beania Tanae. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Beania below.
Alright, Beania thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
There has been countless occasions where I’ve taken the time to carefully analyze my thoughts and formulate the most considerate and careful way to express them, and they still be misunderstood. I feel I’ve been misunderstood my whole life. That’s why I love putting my negative feelings into beautiful songs. I actually have a song called “MI$UNDERSTOOD” and I’m just waiting for the perfect moment to drop it. They gone understand me soon enough.
Beania, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started writing music a little before COVID hit. Just because I’ve always been encouraged to do so by family members and have always been in love with music. It literally has helped me get this far in my life. When COVID did hit and the lockdown occurred, I fell into a dark space and needed to release. I went on this app called Voisey, where people record their own shot songs over pre-made loops. I made a short song about disliking the COVID pandemic and posted it on Instagram. I got lots of good feedback on it and was inspired to take my music creation more seriously. My best friend at the time had a cousin who was already into music and encouraged me to go to the studio with him to get more comfortable with recording professionally. I FELL IN LOVEEEE!!! The whole process is stressful yet so beautiful. So so beautiful. It can take a lot of self-motivation to consistently stick to something you love to do when you’re not in the best headspace. Fast forward 3 years later to today, I still use songwriting as a tool to express my deepest darkest feelings. Feelings that most people are likely to be experiencing but are afraid to admit it. I aspire to be an artist people listen to when they don’t know how to express themselves.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is to provide myself with the love and life that I’ve always hoped for. Once I’m able to do that, I’ll be on a mission to relocate my family in Detroit to Atlanta so we can be close to one another again. Family means a lot to me and it definitely takes a huge toll on my mental to not have them around on a regular basis. Everyone needs a support system, even if it’s just emotional and mental support.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Like most young people, I used to do a lot of foul sh*t. I wasn’t loyal in relationships and I was often dishonest to people for my own benefit. It took me getting into a lot of trouble and losing the trust of the people most important to me for me to realize that is not the way to live. I became a very open and honest being and it felt so pure. It’s refreshing to wake up and feel genuinely in tuned with yourself. Alot of people in this generation, and even the ones before it, don’t know themselves. As an artist, I feel it is vital to know your truest self and to put it all out there. Unapologetically.
