Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bb Blue. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bb, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
For me, my creative path has been a 15+ year journey of finding my sound, learning my influences, and constantly developing my skills in each aspect of song craft. I always pick up something new from everyone I collaborate with. I also use my heroes as my mentors and study and analyze their work. And then I learn as much as possible about my heroes heroes to understand how they shaped their approach to music. Since 2021 I have been lucky enough to have MARLO, my partner in crime and main collaborator as my mentee. I’ve learned so much from teaching him and he continues to teach me more every day. I don’t look at music like something you can fully learn because I know that I can always keep growing and evolving as a creator.
Bb, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born “Cody Williams” and raised in Los Angeles, bb blue began writing professionally in the music industry at the young age of 16. Over the years, bb has worked with renowned producers and songwriters such as RedOne, Darkchild, Stargate, Lindy Robbins, and Toby Gad. His breakthrough moment came when he received his first major label credit on Big Time Rush’s sophomore album, Elevate, which he co-produced and co-wrote with JR Rotem.
However, in 2012, bb was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and had to take a hiatus from the industry. During his time in solitude, he devoted himeself to developing each aspect of songcraft and creating his own unique sound. In 2021, bb blue was born alongside my main collaborator, MARLO.
As of today, bb blue has released three singles that have each reached over 100,000 streams on Spotify, with “Muse” nearing 200,000 streams. One of our top singles, “Dead & Gone,” was co-written and co-produced with the band WALK THE MOON. We also have an extensive catalog of polished radio-ready demos and beats. Having worked with hundreds of artists, I have the ability to adapt and instead co-write while an artist spearheads the writing session. I am guaranteed to have you walking out the door with something to be excited about.
Despite still building our fan base, we had a surprise encounter with Bruno Mars and his manager in 2022 who loved the music and tried to secure a record deal with us at Atlantic Records. However, bb blue is continuing to pursue our careers independently without any label support at this time.
His debut album, Blueniverse, was finally released in March 2023. The influences of bb blue are vast, but they are especially inspired by David Bowie, Charli XCX, Sophie, Max Martin, Prince, and Michael Jackson. Despite the challenges, bb is poised to make a significant impact in the industry.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I had to believe in myself and my talent and keep pushing forward. Even when I faced rejection, I refused to let it define my career. I kept writing songs every chance I could and honing my craft. But then I was hit with another obstacle: Crohn’s disease. This chronic condition made it difficult to keep up with the demanding schedule of the music industry. But I refused to let it hold me back. I found ways to manage my symptoms and continued to push forward. Even when it seemed like the competition was insurmountable and every door was closed, I never gave up. I persisted, staying true to my passion and vision. And eventually, that resilience paid off. After years of hard work and dedication, my music has begun to catch on. I truly believe that if you believe in yourself and stay committed to your goals, you can achieve anything.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the creativity that comes with it. Being able to write an amazing song, creating a melody and working through the logistics in your head is such a fulfilling experience. When you finally figure out what’s missing from a piece and you crack the code, it’s a feeling like no other. Seeing yourself improve gradually day by day, even when you don’t see it on the microscale, is so satisfying and motivating to keep pushing forward. Ultimately, the ability to express oneself through art and share it with the world is a privilege and an honor that brings immense joy and fulfillment.
