Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bastian Calva. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Bastian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
As an actor and filmmaker, I’m really proud of my Netflix movie A Not So Merry Christmas, as it gave my acting work exposure to a global audience. I was in Hollywood when my agent called to tell me Netflix wanted to see me. I sent in my self-tape, and a few weeks later, I got the call that I had landed the part.
I have had the privilege of producing several projects under my own film production company, gbc films. One of the most meaningful projects to me is I Promise to Never Forget, where I worked as the lead actor, producer, and co-writer. We shot the film in New York City, and it was an incredible experience working in iconic locations like Times Square and Central Park. What made the project even more special was that, while I was honing my craft at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in the UK, we received our first film festival nomination in London. It was such a meaningful moment for me that the festival tour began there. After that, the film received nominations at festivals around the world, including in Europe, the US, Canada, Africa, and Mexico.
Right now, I am in the preproduction phase of my new film, in which I will play the lead role, produce, and have written the script..
Being part of the LATAM remake of My Best Friend’s Wedding was a pivotal moment in my career. I was just 14 years old, almost 15, when I landed that role, and since then, I’ve worked on numerous projects, both nationally and internationally. You can watch that movie on Amazon Prime.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Bastian Calva is an actor and filmmaker from Mexico. His work has been featured in prestigious cities such as Los Angeles, New York, and London.
I’ve been working in the film industry since I was 14 years old, starting with a movie produced by Sony Pictures. Since then, I’ve appeared in numerous films and TV shows. I also run my own film production company, gbc films.
I’ve been involved in projects for platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime, among others. I’ve trained at various studios in Hollywood, where actors like Brad Pitt, Halle Berry, and Amy Adams studied, and in the UK at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where renowned actors such as Olivia Colman and Daniel Day-Lewis have trained.
I am committed to continuous learning whenever I have time between projects. As an actor, producer, and writer, I am always involved in new films. Having been part of the film industry from a young age, I am dedicated to creating opportunities for emerging talent with every project I produce.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I believe in sharing stories that allow people to see themselves and spark a personal reflection about their lives. Life is short, but knowing that I can create stories that inspire and make life more meaningful is what truly makes me feel alive.
I would also say that seeing how my art has evolved as I get older is what makes it even more profound and powerful.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would say that capturing the different nuances that life offers and bringing them to the big screen is one of my main goals. It serves as a reminder that life, in its essence, is already beautiful, and we are fortunate to be a part of it.
As a filmmaker, I am committed to ensuring that my projects offer opportunities to creative artists who are waiting for their chance to shine.
