We were lucky to catch up with Bart Weiss recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bart Weiss, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
In my filmmaking, film programming, writing and podcasting about film and video, I work and look for works that are outside of the mainstream.
Bart Weiss, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
for example, Firebones (at firebones.org) is a video and audio experience told in a unique way. Intended for experiencing sequentially on mobile devices. My programming of the Dallas VideoFest and Frame of Mind features subjects, techniques, and themes beyond traditional media.
I aim to expand people notion of what media can be
Have you ever had to pivot?
I came to Dallas to teach at SMU, for reasons that had nothing to do with me, the job was over in a year. One day I mentioned to someone at dinner, it would be cool if there was a club in Dallas that showed music videos, a month later we started on the air, which led to me writing a column about the music video in the Dallas morning news. And later I started the Dallas VideoFest.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
As a creative, I get joy out of creating, the goal for me, has been think up interesting things that have never been done, or if they have been, a way to do them differently. For me, creativity paved the way to make a living.
