We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bart “Barnabas” Woinski. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bart “Barnabas” below.
Bart “Barnabas”, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
When my partner, Samael, and I first began our horror podcast, Grave Discussions, we knew we were entering a niche populated by other genre super-fans and scholars. But, while there are probably hundreds of podcasts centering on horror media, we stand out by offering a unique structure and two incredible hosts listeners won’t find anywhere else. Our show typically consists of the latest genre news and then an in-depth analysis of a movie (sometimes multiple) or pertinent topic.
What makes us reputable is one host’s status as a filmmaker, screenwriter, and entertainment journalist with a degree in Film Studies and the other host’s genius-level knowledge of slashers, monsters, and other things that go bump in the night. We are also very honest about our opinions. Not every horror podcast possesses the understanding that we do when it comes to the community surrounding our favorite cinematic category or what goes into making these movies and shows. We prove that with every new episode of Grave Discussions.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My partner, Samael, and I began Grave Discussions in 2018 on a whim. We had been lifelong horror fans who had only ever gotten to gush about our favorite cinematic genre with each other, but when the idea for a podcast came to me, I knew he was the right person to have by my side. We have been releasing new episodes of Grave Discussions in audio form for nearly five years now and have grown a small but passionate following.
Our episodes usually consist of the latest news in horror, followed by a topical discussion about a new film or burning topic or a retrospective about a hidden gem or cult classic. What sets us apart? Us! I bring technical and storytelling analysis to our discussions, while Samael brings passion, history, and humor. And we’re both unafraid of speaking our minds.
New listeners should be aware that due to some significant life events, we no longer publish weekly episodes but release them whenever we have time. However, we are still committed to dropping new episodes of Grave Discussions as often as possible for our dedicated Gravers.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative in the podcasting sphere, especially within the horror community, is having the opportunity to interact with others about the thing we are most passionate about. We do what we do to communicate our thoughts and feelings about movies, shows, and sometimes games to others, but it’s no fun being in an echo chamber. Hearing other views and opinions is essential and helps us grow as viewers and critics, so it is the best part of the experience.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Truthfully, our social media presence is still minimal, but we built what we have organically. Putting out content consistently and creating effective marketing is pivotal. As our social media manager, I also try to follow like-minded individuals and businesses, interact with their content, and occasionally reach out to them to swap ideas. Sure, you could buy your audience, but doing it organically will bring the best people to you naturally and ethically.
