Barry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I’ve got to be honest…being a creative is tough right now. We live in a world where art is consumed but often not appreciated. Arts are always the first to be defunded, but it’s the first thing people turn to when looking for entertainment.
So, am I happy as a creative? Yes, I love that I get to make people laugh and smile…but it’s so hard sometimes. I can’t go back to having a regular job…can you imagine me, a monster, serving people a sandwich or as a barista?!
Barry, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For the most part, I’m a lovable little monster who visits events and places all over Southern California to learn more about humans. I also do a lot of comedy, both online and at stand-up.
I think what sets me apart from others is the fact that I am a puppet. I mean, there are PLENTY of puppets in the world: on Sesame Street, in the government, etc. But I think I’m doing something a little different, and giving people a furry little monster to root for.
I got to where I am today by working hard and never giving up. It was NOT easy; there were plenty of times I wanted to quit. There still are times like that! But with the help of my human friends (and a little gardening service side business), I keep going and going. You’ll never get rid of me!
I learned that not everyone is going to love you, and that’s okay! You gotta keep being you and being unique for your own sake. Conformity is boring!
I want people to remember me for who I am: an annoying little monster!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My whole life is on social media…it allows me to connect with people all over the world! I’d never be able to get half the gigs I do if it wasn’t for it. I post at least once a day, every day, just to stay relevant and in the algorithm. You just have to keep at it and not get discouraged.
