We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Barry Marz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Barry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I think the most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my most recent project THE AWAKENING. During the creation of this project, I was meditating everyday, several times a day. It 100% contributed to my soul’s growth and transformation, so the project itself is me going through the motions of that self improvement. There was a lot of healing involved during those months, so the tracks themselves have healing properties and are very relatable. This Project is meaningful to me because it’s almost like journal entries in the form of Spoken Word Poetry. The Project in whole takes the listener on a trip into the atmosphere and reality I’ve created sonically.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Blessed day to the canvas readers! My name is Barry Marz, and I am from Fairfax, Virginia by way of Washington, DC. I got into the Music Industry through poetry. As a youth, I had a natural gift of writing poetry, which later translated into Music given my Father’s background in Smooth Jazz Guitar & my Mother’s all around good ear for Music. What sets me apart from other Artists is the fact that I am in The Spoken Word genre. It’s such a niche genre that not many Artists are in currently, and the Music I made is all together different from a Rapper’s or a Lyricist’s. I am most proud of my ability to create worlds & realities within my Music. I approach songs like movie scores. I want to take the listener on a trip from the start to the finish and give them an experience sonically that they won’t receive anywhere else but from me. I want listeners and fans to know that yes, there is someone out there thinking some of the same things you think that you may be afraid to voice. I am here to be the voice for the voiceless, to provoke thought, teach, and spread positivity.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
This is an amazing question. When I first started releasing Music, I had a feeling that the Artists that I listened to were on Facebook using their government names. Once I searched their names in the Facebook search engine, I ended up being correct. I would spend hours and days adding any and every Artist I could think of and even adding different creatives from the “People You May Know” section. This translated to my other Social Media Platforms, such as Instagram & Twitter. It got to the point where I was already aware of many of the Artists that we’re blowing up in the coming years. My best advice for anyone trying to build their social media presence is simple: join engagement groups, and follow the fans of your favorite Artists / Creatives. Before you know it, you’ve created a dedicated core fanbase. It takes time, and sometimes years, but this has always proven to be such an effective method for me.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, there definitely is. I want to positively impact the world through my Spoken Word Poetry, and I want to become the number 1 Spoken Word Poet in the world. As high of an achievement that would be, statistically, I am in the top 20% in the Spoken Word Genre, so I believe this goal is 100% attainable. Lastly, I want a Grammy in The Audiobook category.
