We were lucky to catch up with Barry Alston recently and have shared our conversation below.
Barry, appreciate you joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
It was scary. I was taking acting jobs here and there while working a full time job. Acting opportunities then came consistently and I found myself debating calling out of work and did a lot. It came to a point where a decision had to be made. Me making decision to go full throttle with the acting was not easy, it was extremely scary, but yet it was an act of faith
Barry, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was working various jobs but dealing with so many issues on them, as well as unjust treatment. A friend encouraged me to pursue the acting and eventually I did and I never looked back
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Yes, how hard and how dedicated you have to be. It’s a non stop grind. There is a GREAT deal of work that goes forth to bring you 30, 60, 90 minutes of entertainment. The constant work to perfect your craft. The long hours. Remembering. Executing. The list goes on!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
When people appreciate the work. The work that most of us put in when the camera is not on so when it is it’s real and enjoyable to all is beyond rewarding
