We were lucky to catch up with Barrett Hopper recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Barrett thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
Shortly after graduation from undergrad, I was not having any success getting any job offers. I was either over qualified or not qualified enough. So, I started delivering pizzas while living in a dilapidated house. The pizza gig provided daily cash, nightly food, and a hunger to change my directory.
The first thing I did was to tell my boss that I would be leaving in two weeks (developed a vision). Then I said a prayer asking God for the right opportunity (exercised faith). The next day, I applied for three opportunities within my field (took action). I was rewarded with three interviews and three job offers. I have continued to use that method to succeed.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As an agent of change and process disruptor, I have completed extensive training in areas such as psychology, goal setting, and process improvement. I am a lean practitioner and member of the Harvard Business School Alumni association.
As a distance runner, I know the value of never giving up. I believe in people empowerment and development to make today a little better than yesterday. I live by the mantra of: “Each day regardless of where you are in your journey of purpose, you’d better be Running!”

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I set a goal when I finished college in 1990 to read 12 books per year. Now, I read over 100 per year. This gives me the opportunity to continue to learn and do a deep dive in many areas. A few years ago, I had a mental shift after reading “Outliers” by Malcolm Galdwell. However, over the past couple of years I have read over twenty books by Joseph Murphy. Those have been a game changer for me. Dr. Murphy teaches on the power of the subconscious to unleashing the infinite intelligence. I have used his teaching to create a focused approach to striving for excellence. I have incorporated his philosophy with my clients to unleash their highest potential.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2015, I was managing a global chemical manufacturing operation, directed a youth track and field team, owned a specialty running store while training over two-hundred adults 19-70 yrs old, president of the 2nd largest USA Track and Field association in the US, an adjust professor for Texas community colleges, and running my own consulting company. Then on December 26, 2015, I was headed directly towards an unseasoned tornado in Dallas Texas whole driving. After the near death experience, I realized that I needed more focus and wanted to have an intentional impact. It just so happened, that my job was eliminated after a merger. On top of that my then wife (now ex) filed for divorce. I knew that I had only one choice. That choice was to use my talent to focus outside of myself. I started a 5K fundraiser event to raise money for victims of the tornado. In order to focus, I stepped down from my position of USA Track and Field. In the process, I donated 100 % of the profits from the event and closed my running store. I transferred the track team and running club members to other qualified coaches (it gave them an opportunity to grow). I then took over leadership for another chemical firm with operations in several states. Soon after joining the organization, I developed an internal continual improvement school certifying lean six sigma greenbelt. I was able to certify over 300 individuals at some level. The bottom line is that I kept getting up and moving forward.
