Barney, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?

The most compassionate act I’ve experienced was when my high school English teacher placed their unwavering faith in me, affording me the opportunity to design an autonomous course and craft comic books. This pivotal moment bolstered my self-assurance in my artistic aptitude and planted the seed that venturing into unexplored realms and surpassing my comfort boundaries was not only acceptable but pivotal for personal evolution.

Undoubtedly, this was the foundational stride that propelled me towards attending art school. This newfound self-assuredness emboldened me to later join the Peace Corps and engage in international relief endeavors, ultimately enabling me to craft impactful graphic novels based on my experiences.

I’m a Writer and Illustrator known for my distinctive autobiographical satirical graphic novels. My focus is on narrating my exhilarating experiences in international relief work alongside the delightful complexities of being in an intercultural marriage.

Rooted in the scenic landscapes of Vermont, I’m not just a cartoonist but a proud father to three remarkable kids and a husband to a Nigerian Runway Model, which beautifully adds to the diversity of my life experiences.

I also created an engaging community at storycomic.com, which I have established as a haven for narratives spun from the world of comics and comic-driven tales. Within these virtual walls, we engage in captivating conversations with storytellers and artists, plunging into the multifaceted world of prose, children’s books, graphic novels, and illustrations. Our primary focus is celebrating the visionaries behind these creations, the geniuses who infuse joy and curiosity into our lives.

The genesis of Storycomic dates back to its humble origins as a platform to showcase my works. Yet, as the tapestry of connections with fellow artists and authors grew, it became evident that a treasure trove of brilliance existed, waiting to be shared alongside valuable insights.

What commenced as an occasional Livestream rendezvous with industry peers has transformed into a celebrated international podcast. It’s a sonic journey that has resonated across more than 50 countries, becoming a bridge connecting minds and hearts across the globe.

What sets my work apart is its distinctive blend of satire and autobiography. My graphic novels unfold real-world adventures with a playful twist, fostering a deep connection between readers and the universal themes I explore. These narratives paint a vibrant canvas where the poignant nuances of intercultural marriage intertwine with the enlightening escapades of international relief work. I am also a published author of 2 books on Dad Jokes.

How did you build your audience on social media?

My journey of audience building on social media is one that’s rooted in the power of community engagement and strategic outreach. As an example, think about someone who is a creator of independent horror comics, I found that my path to building a robust online presence required a two-pronged approach: connecting with fellow creators in the comic community and engaging with the horror enthusiasts who would appreciate their work.

The foundation of strategy needs to be laid upon fostering meaningful connections within the indie comics community. This proved essential not only for camaraderie but also for gathering insights, seeking advice, and receiving support from those who understood the unique challenges and triumphs of comic creation. These connections can provide a wellspring of knowledge and camaraderie that keeps me motivated and continuously improving my craft.

However, recognize that the ultimate audience, the recipients of this example of horror comics, resided in the horror aficionado community. They are the ones who would be captivated by the narratives and imagery and who one should to engage with most deeply. While not providing insights into comic creation, this community held the potential to become my loyal readers and advocates.

The wisdom I’d like to impart to those embarking on their social media journey is to embrace this dual-community approach.
