We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bari-Lynn Friedlander. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bari-Lynn below.
Bari-Lynn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’ve had the privilege of contributing to some profoundly impactful projects, focusing on crucial themes such as mental health awareness, promoting equality and LGBTQ+ rights, and more recently, initiatives related to Israel. Experiencing the transformative power of my art and craft in making a positive difference has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Bari-Lynn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an abstract artist currently residing in Miami, with a background in the design and fashion industry in New York City. Having worked for the world’s largest luxury conglomerate and contributed to renowned American retailers, I made a big decision in 2019 to pivot back to my true passion—painting. This shift marked a return to my source of happiness and illumination during ny darkest times.
Amidst the social upheaval of our nation, encompassing the challenges of COVID-19, the 2020 presidential election, and the many battles for equality, I discovered that my art could be a force for love rather than hate. Having grappled with mental health struggles, I found solace and an escape from darkness in my painting. Whether wielding a pen, pencil, or brush, the act of creation consistently transported me to a calm and meditative state of mind. Art truly saved my life, and I believe that my purpose is to share this light and love with others.
My signature collection, the Abstract Cubism Series, serves as my medium for spreading love through an interplay of colors and mesmerizing lines. This creative expression aims not only to evoke a sense of togetherness and unity but also to reflect my personal battles with anxiety and depression through contrasting abstract forms. Beyond the Cubism Series, my portfolio extends to Abstract Line Drawings, where the simplicity and movement of thin line-work capture the essence of human connection.
As an advocate for mental health awareness, I hope to inspire open conversations through my art. In every stroke and expression, I strive to bring people together and foster a greater understanding of the human experience.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The pinnacle of fulfillment as an artist lies in crafting bespoke pieces for individuals and their living spaces. Commissions stand out as my absolute favorite projects, offering the opportunity to tailor each work precisely to the client’s preferences and infuse it with a unique touch of love. Witnessing the joy on customers’ faces upon receiving their commissioned pieces and later receiving heartfelt expressions of ongoing love for their cherished artworks is the most gratifying aspect of my craft.
The true gift in my profession is the ability to share a piece of myself with every client, creating a connection that transcends the transaction. The relationships formed with these clients extend beyond mere artistic endeavors; they evolve into enduring friendships and bonds that last a lifetime. It’s a privilege to contribute not only to the aesthetics of their homes but also to the tapestry of their lives, making the artistic journey a profound and enriching experience for both creator and patron alike.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Navigating through my depression was undeniably the hardest chapter of my life. There was a period where envisioning myself as an actual artist, leading a joy-filled life following my dreams, seemed confined to the realm of daydreams—I couldn’t fathom it becoming a reality. Reflecting on my journey today, I’m struck by the profound transformation I’ve undergone, and my heart overflows with gratitude for every challenge I’ve faced.
In the depths of my depression, the prospect of the life I now lead was beyond my wildest imagination. Now, I find myself thankful for every instance of pain, as it served as the catalyst for discovering art as my solace. Without my depression, I might never have found this profound connection to my craft. Each second of pain and depression has become a stepping stone on the path to the purposeful and fulfilling life I now gratefully live.
Gratitude permeates my existence—gratitude not only for the remarkable moments of beauty but also for the excruciating journey that paved the way. Acknowledging these hardships lends a profound richness to the beautiful moments we all witness but sometime takes for granted.
