We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Barbara Rachko a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Barbara , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I recently completed a short film about my life and work called, “Barbara Rachko: True Grit.” This is something I have been wanting to do for more than ten years after a friend first suggested it. My route to becoming an artist has been circuitous to say the least. In my 20s I learned to fly and became a licensed Boeing-727 Flight Engineer. Then I joined the Navy expecting to fly, but I never was allowed to. Deeply unhappy with my Navy career, I looked around for something meaningful to do with my life and rediscovered art.
Our film has been accepted into the Montreal Women Film Festival! The filmmakers and I are thrilled and are hoping to turn our short film into a feature film at a later date.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. My mission is to demonstrate the heights that can be achieved with soft pastel. I am pushing pastel to its limits, using it in ways that no other artist has done. In my view soft pastel is the best fine art medium there is, period. My tag line is “Revolutionizing pastel as fine art!”
