Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Barbara Luraschi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Barbara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I actually started my business quite unexpectedly. It all began after my son’s first birthday—when I made and decorated a cake for him, I realized how much I loved the creative process. I started exploring cake modeling more seriously, and soon, magazines began asking me to create monthly tutorials.
That led to even more opportunities, and before I knew it, international magazines were inviting me to contribute. In 2015, I was honored to be nominated as a finalist in the Cake Masters Awards for the Modeling Excellence category. Around that same time, I was invited to teach in Dubai—my very first time teaching abroad—and it was such an exciting milestone.
That experience marked the beginning of my business. I’ve been teaching ever since, and I’ve had the amazing opportunity to travel and share my passion with students around the world!
Barbara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As I was saying before, I discovered the world of cake decorating after making a cake for my son’s first birthday. That moment sparked something special in me, and I quickly realized that the key to my success has been sharing my passion—especially through teaching modeling classes.
There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing my students create their own figurines and hearing their kind words after class. Knowing they’ve learned and gained confidence means so much to me.
One of my proudest achievements is writing my first book, which I launched in November 2023. I’m incredibly proud of it—and thanks to its wonderful success, I’m now working on my second book, which will be out very soon!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I honestly didn’t expect to have such a great number of followers. When I first started sharing pictures of my work, it was just for fun—mainly for friends. But soon, I noticed that my photos were being shared again and again, and that brought a lot of visibility.
Before I knew it, my posts were reaching a wide audience, and my follower count started to grow quickly. It was such a surprise—but also a wonderful achievement, because it meant that more and more people were discovering my work. It’s been an amazing way to connect and share my passion with others!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When COVID suddenly hit, I lost my job almost overnight—it was a very difficult and uncertain time. I felt sad and worried about the future, especially during the first three months when everything felt unclear and I didn’t know what direction to take.
But then I made a decision: I wanted to keep doing what I love—decorating cakes, creating tutorials, and sharing my passion—so I started offering online classes. I knew it wouldn’t be the same as hands-on teaching, because those in-person connections are so special, but moving online gave me the chance to keep my job alive and stay connected with my students and community.
