Hi Barbara , thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?

From Corporate to Cocktails: A Journey of Reinvention”

For 23 years, I dedicated my life to a major wireless company, pouring my heart and soul into my work. But when the winds of change blew, and the company decided to relocate, I found myself at a crossroads. The thought of uprooting my life and starting anew in another state was daunting, and I was left wondering what my next move would be.

After three weeks of soul-searching, I decided to take a leap of faith and enroll in a bartending course. It was a decision made out of sheer boredom, but little did I know that it would become the catalyst for a remarkable journey of reinvention.

As the oldest student in the class, I was initially intimidated. The thought of memorizing countless drink recipes and competing against younger, more experienced bartenders seemed like an insurmountable challenge. But I persevered, and to my surprise, I not only aced the course but also discovered a newfound passion for the art of mixology.

My journey took an unexpected turn when I landed a job at the Baltimore Convention Center. Working in the events industry opened my eyes to a world of possibilities, and I quickly realized that I wanted to carve out my own path rather than working in a bar or restaurant.

The tipping point came when I witnessed firsthand the mistreatment and underpayment of employees by some agencies. It was a wake-up call that ignited a fire within me to create a better, more equitable workplace.

And so, BAR 51 was born. The name serves as a timestamp, a reminder of how far I’ve come in my journey. As I approach my 57th birthday, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible experiences of the past six years. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.

My story is a testament to the power of reinvention and the resilience of the human spirit. It’s a reminder that no matter where life takes you, it’s never too late to pursue your passions and create the life you’ve always dreamed of.

stumbled into the world of mixology by chance, but it was a chance that changed my life. After dedicating 23 years to a corporate career, I found myself at a crossroads when the company decided to relocate. Unsure of my next move, I enrolled in a bartending course on a whim. Little did I know that this decision would lead me to discover a passion that would shape the next chapter of my life.

BAR 51 is more than just a business; it’s a reflection of my journey of reinvention. As a seasoned bartender, I provide a range of services, from crafting signature cocktails for events to offering mixology classes for enthusiasts. My goal is to create memorable experiences that leave a lasting impression on my clients and their guests.

One of the main problems I aim to solve for my clients is the lack of personalized and high-quality service in the events industry. I believe that every event is unique and deserves a bespoke approach. We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?

Throughout my career, I’ve encountered numerous challenges and obstacles, each of which has taught me valuable lessons. However, one of the most significant lessons I’ve had to unlearn was the notion that success is solely determined by following a linear path.

For years, I believed that success was achieved by climbing the corporate ladder, following a predetermined trajectory, and adhering to a set of predefined rules. This mindset served me well in my early career, allowing me to excel and achieve my goals within the confines of a structured environment.

However, as I progressed in my career and faced new challenges, I began to realize that this rigid mindset was limiting my potential. I found myself clinging to outdated beliefs and methodologies, unable to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape of the industry.

The turning point came when I was faced with a major setback in my career. The company I had dedicated over two decades to decided to relocate, leaving me at a crossroads. I was forced to confront the reality that the path I had been following was no longer viable.

It was a humbling experience, but it also presented an opportunity for growth. I had to unlearn the belief that success was synonymous with a traditional career path and embrace the idea that success could be achieved through adaptability and resilience.

I began to explore new avenues and opportunities, eventually stumbling upon the world of mixology. It was a chance encounter that changed the trajectory of my career and led me to discover a passion I never knew I had.

In hindsight, I realize that unlearning the belief in a linear career path was one of the best decisions I ever made. It allowed me to break free from the constraints of convention and embrace a more flexible and dynamic approach to success.

Today, I am grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and the challenges I’ve faced. They have shaped me into the person I am today and have given me the courage to pursue my passions with an open mind and a willingness to adapt.
