Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Barbara Fox. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Barbara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope that people will remember that I made them smile, laugh, have fun, enjoy themselves. and for a little while, forget their problems through the interactive mystery comedies I write and act in, the books I write and the mystery games I produce. I think it’s important that people take the time to relax, to play, to socialize and I think, I hope that my little mysteries do that. I’d like people to smile when they think of me and my writing.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started the theater company, Mystery on the Menu LlC in 1986 and I’m proud that, almost forty years later, it is still doing strong.
During those years I have produced mystery shows at restaurants, hotels, convention centers, aboard cruise ship , trains. private homes and more for corporate and private and open-to-the-public events. During the recession I developed the One=woman mystery show where people in the audience are given parts to read as I tell the story; I wrote mystery games for six or eight people which people could buy down- load and play with friends in their homes. I wrote several mystery novels including the Murder in the Inn series and books of short mysteries which people can try to solve before reading the solutions (Murder is Served and Mystery Is Served. I also wrote self-help books (Young for a
Very Long time,,= Widowpedia (My life as a widow ) and Once Upon Aphasia (my recent experiences after a brain bleed). I feel very lucky that I could and can do the things I love, writing and acting, and actually get paid for doing them.
I would like to do a better job at marketing my books. My wish and goal is to see one of my books made into a movie or television series

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I always remembered that the customer deserves a smooth, professional show no matter what happens and I never told the client if there was a problem. I just found a solution whether it was electricity going out, (we used candles) or dinner being two hours late (we added more scenes to the show) or countless other things. One example….we were doing a show on a train from Washington DC to Baltimore. One of the main actors got on the wrong train going in the opposite direction There was no way he could return in time , I was playing another character, and said his lines in addition to mine.”if he were here I know he would be saying”. etc The client never knew anything was wrong and the show was a success.

Have you ever had to pivot?
When the recession hit no one had the money to pay for a mystery show so I developed the one-woman mystery where I was the only actor…Much more cost-effective since I only had to pay myself. Clients loved the idea of being a part of the show and I was able to stay in business when other theater groups were closing.
