We recently connected with Barbara Bowers and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Barbara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I learned to just be confident in my product. I always find myself comparing my products/displays/presentations to those around me – but I feel most at ease when I shake those feelings and just be content in what I offer.
Impostor syndrome is defined as an inability to recognize my success and skills that are needed for a thriving business and product. Personally, I find myself doubting that anyone would want to buy our product in a market that is saturated with similar products, but they do in large amounts.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Good Morning! Thank you for having me. After a seventeen year career in EMS, my position was outsourced and I was looking for something new. My husband told me that I needed a hobby – so after a candle making class with my Aunt, our business was born. I took my career into my own hands and developed Lancaster Wax Co in 2019. Learning everything about wax, candles and running a small business, she grew the business into a six-figure business in just over three years.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
For the first seventeen years of my “adult” life – all I knew was EMS. When Lancaster Wax Co was created – I needed to learn all about candle manufacturing, along with running a small business. We released our products to the public in September 2019 and then the Pandemic hit. Retail locations that offered our products were shuttered, so we had to pivot to an online selling model, utilizing our website and social media. There was even a six month period that we offered curbside delivery!

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey. This book illustrates his philosophy of recognizing greenlights or creating those moments when life says “yes” and you can pursue success.
