We were lucky to catch up with Barb Eckert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Barb, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My Journey To A More Balanced Life
The first symptom was my hoarse voice. Next came a lump in my throat. Then the heart palpitations started followed by significant weight loss. Test results confirmed I had Graves’ disease, also known as hyperthyroidism, and my doctor said I would need to be on medication for the rest of my life. The side effects were going to be significant. At the time of this diagnosis I had a demanding, high-stress job running a very large medical practice. I made a habit of absorbing all my staff’s issues to make them feel better but clearly it was at the expense of my own well-being. My body was telling me, “Barb, you need to make a change.”
That change came three months post diagnosis when I met Certified Breathwork Facilitator and Advanced Reiki Practitioner Tiffany Curren. She introduced me to Breathwork and after my first session I knew this was going to change my life. By the third session I could feel the negative energy shift out through my throat and since then I practice Breathwork, Yoga and Meditation every day,
Today I’m no longer on medication for my thyroid. My doctors report I am disease-free, they are calling it a miracle. I say I am dis-ease [not at ease or in flow] -free because I have learned, through Breathwork, how to release the energy that holds me back and I now lead a more balanced life.
Barb, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
All The Feels Healing Space-I offer a safe space for clients to “feel” their emotions, and release the ones no longer serving them. In a world where we may have been taught to stuff down our feelings, brush them under the carpet, and pretend that “everything is all right”, I create the a space to lean in and embrace feelings. When we peal back the layers of cultural conditioning, the “shoulds”, the need to please others, and reconnect with our core, we create a life being lived from love and authenticity.
We use our breath in a conscious way to move the emotional energy in our bodies, and releasing the emotions no longer serving us. This practice is done all lying down, with a blanket and an eye pillow. The practice can be done in person or over zoom with the same benefits.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn everything I had ever been taught, as I had been taught to please everyone else at the expense of myself. I shut down my voice, my inner knowing, to fit in and get ahead at my job at a large medical practice. Our practice was being sold to the hospital. The managing partners made the deal with the hospital, and then placed the responsibly on me to navigate to transition. When I questioned some policies that were going to be put in place I was told “just get it done and don’t’ ruffle any feathers”. I had heard so many other times to just do and keep the peace. The result was physical illness due to repressed emotions. The good thing is I found breathwork due to this illness, cured myself, and now teach others how to find the healer within themselves.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Doing the daily work myself in order to quiet the mind, slow down and continue to heal. I’m able to hold space for my clients to heal in a judgement free, safe space which is the intention I set for each session. Since I have been on my healing journey, I can relate to others on their journey.
