Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Baoqi Ding. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Baoqi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
One important lesson I learned at QuillBot is the value of iterative design and feedback loops. I am working on an AI-driven product with millions of users, and I’ve learned that user needs and behaviors can change quickly, particularly when engaging AIs. Continuously refining and improving our product within the design process is crucial to gathering user feedback at every stage. To better serve the users’ needs, I need to always keep in mind my bias as a designer and be open to all different user aspects.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a product experience designer, my passion lies in creating user-centric and user-empowering solutions. My design journey began with accessory design, where I honed my focus on details. However, I realized I could make a more meaningful impact by transitioning into UX design, where I could put the user at the heart of every solution.
Writing can be challenging, whether we are crafting a job application email or working on a marketing upselling post. But what if an intelligent assistant could guide you through these hurdles, providing contextual suggestions when stuck? QuillBot is the solution. In my current role, I design user interfaces and flows incorporating AI into writing and content creation. My daily tasks at QuillBot involve collecting user feedback, brainstorming ideas, and transforming concepts into digital screens. As part of a team of designers and developers, we are the creators behind every user interaction, and our goal is to help users achieve their writing goals faster and more confidently.
In short, my job is all about crafting experiences, prioritizing user support and empowerment, and streamlining tasks for maximum efficiency.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It is always gratifying to know that my design choices positively impact someone’s day, whether by making it easier, more enjoyable, or accessible.
I felt this deeply in every stage of designing a product. I took pictures of the happy and thinking faces during my past public participatory project, Black Box. I invited people to experience how valuable their data is. I heard people experiencing homelessness saying how great it is to be involved in brainstorming sessions with designers to work on a platform where they can get more updated information on resources. I saw the reviews where English learners talked about how the product I designed helped them finish their thesis paper. The experience of capturing pain points, collaborating with diverse teams and users, and seeing the transformation of an idea from conception to a final product is incredibly fulfilling.
As a product designer in the AI industry, the thrill of constant learning and innovation required to adapt to new technologies and user needs contributes to the role’s excitement and satisfaction. It’s a dynamic field that keeps me on my toes and fuels my passion for design.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One of the main motivations behind my creative career is my dedication to empowering women through technology and design.
This is reflected in my work, Coplus, where I prioritize creating gender diversity in the computer science industry. The lack of female role models in this industry makes the learning journey challenging for those wanting to enter. Coplus is a platform where female developers are encouraged to share their stories and find pair development opportunities. Resources and guidance make self-development easier for women and girls.
I am also working on a project to design an AI-powered app for women’s solo travel. Research shows that many women are blocked by safety reasons and afraid of exploring the world. Adventures are worthwhile. The app helps users create their personalized journey with a few clicks while emphasizing safety via the checking-in feature. There is also an in-app traveler community set to provide travel tips and recommendations.
As a product designer, I am committed to helping others in their journey of self-improvement and encouraging them to view the world from a new angle.
