We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Balia Bangoura (artist Name: Balaciaga). We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Balia below.
Alright, Balia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was around three or four years old some of my earliest memories were my parents playing their CD’s in the car. I was always watching BET when I wasn’t suppose to so hearing and seeing Destiny’s Child, Ashanti and all the girls in the music videos just made me want to be a singer/performer.

Balia , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a 27 year old former college athlete but I have always been involved in music as an extracurricular growing up. I didn’t start pursuing music as a career until after college. One day I just decided to give it a try.
Something that sets me apart from others is my singing and rapping abilities. I feel as though I can write a song to any beat ( it might take a minute) but I’m very good at creative writing and that’s what songwriting is to me.
I am most proud of my versatility. You never know what you’re going to get with me and I think that’s exciting for me and potential fans of mine.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think society can best support artist by making space for creative exploration. A lot of creatives are trapped in jobs they HAVE to work in order to live. I think more artist would thrive if they had more creative time to themselves. It also starts with friends and family as well, if your friend or your cousin is a creative just share their work( even if you think it’s trash) somebody might like it.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part for me is the journey of songwriting. I never give myself hard deadlines when it comes to writing because if the words aren’t there they just aren’t there. That forces me to go find inspiration. Sometimes I spend months trying to figure out what I’m going to say to fill in a verse on a song and one day things just start clicking.
