We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Baker Grace a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Baker, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am not always extremely happy as an artist but I think that’s part of being an artist. The goal isn’t to be happy, it’s about allowing yourself to feel every emotion deeply and full so that you can create something beautiful out of it. Even if I had a regular job, I could never stop being an artist. Being an artist isn’t about what you do, it’s about how you see and move through the world. It’s about recognizing that life is a blank canvas and every step, word, action, is a brushstroke that paints our story. Making music is a way of life for me and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else, I’ve always known that this is what I was born to do.

Baker, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi, my name is Baker Grace and I am a singer/songwriter from New Jersey. I always loved music and have been singing and performing for as long as I can remember. My father had a band growing up and I cherished listening to him play guitar and singing along. I started writing my own songs at 14 when I felt words weren’t enough to explain what I was feeling or my passion for wanting to make the world a better place. I put those songs on Soundcloud and got signed to a major label at 16. I left my label at 19 and released an EP independently which amassed millions of plays on Spotify. I am now in the process of releasing another project independently, the first song is called “How You Feeling right now?” and it’s about asking for the truth from someone who’s incapable of it. I write music that heals me and I hope it heals others too. My songs are moments of enlightenment that help me close one door and open another. They provide a safe space for me to reflect and feel without shame or judgement. I hope that with my music, I can show the beauty and strength in vulnerability.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is my creative journey is to encourage people to be their most authentic selves and live life fully. The world needs more love and peace and that comes from looking inward. My music is an opportunity to reflect, embrace vulnerability, and grow.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the best thing society can do to nourish art is embrace individuality and authenticity. We are most creative when our nervous systems are calm. I also think having good education systems, affordable healthcare, and fair pay will give people the freedom and time to create. Art is a slow process and requires space to reveal itself, sadly we don’t get the opportunity to take that space often in this fast paced, overstimulating world.
