We were lucky to catch up with Bakari Vashon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Bakari thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My foundation started in the church playing drums as a kid and experiencing gospel music. If I could go back, I would’ve learned to read music at an even earlier age than high school. It’s a beneficial skill for any musician. My most essential skills are my ability to play drums and offer diversity in any situation or project. My main obstacle in my opinion is having to work multiple full-time jobs to fund my passion initially.
Bakari , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Most certainly. I’m an artist; I’m a drummer, songwriter and musician. Titles can sometimes box you in so I start by saying I’m an artist. I started my career as a teenager being a part of my first music group called, Tyger Hill. We toured regionally opening for major acts such as Twista, Lil John, T.I, and T-Pain to name a few. I pivoted from groups to being a solo artist all while strengthening and maintaining my songwriting abilities. I provided music catalogs ready for placement for albums, projects, and sync placements for music, movies, tv, and commercials. Something I still do today.
My diversity and ability to adapt and create multi genre music as a drummer, songwriter, and creative is what makes me stand apart. In addition to authenticity. I think it’s important to know who you are. It translates well through any project.
I’m most proud of starting my own publishing company and knowing and sharing the business of the industry. I realize a lot of new and seasoned artists don’t know about publishing, split sheets, and contract jargon. That’s where I come in. I’m opening the door to educate our artist, not just on the music side but on the business side as well. I would like my fans to know that I create music for people of all walks of life and I will always shoot it to you straight. I’m not new to this and I love what I do. My passion is expressed through my music and my consulting.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was following the norm of society and the norm of marketing and sharing music. I learned that being innovative excelled my career further than anything. There’s always going to be a “normal” way of doing things but normal is not always the best for you. My goal isn’t to simply stand out but to be authentically me. That authenticity is what makes me stand out. Doing what works best for me, my music and my fans when it comes to this industry.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is having the freedom to express myself with no reservations. Freedom is a commodity. When someone commits a crime, their punishment is the threat of taking their freedom. Why? Because it’s one of the most valuable, non-tangible things we have. It’s something we desire but rarely think about. For some, it’s why we create. We express freely to be free.
