We were lucky to catch up with Bakari Hayes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bakari, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
This life was chosen for me. My mom did this too me & she didnt even know it.

Bakari, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Bakari Hayes, I own a clothing brand Basics based out of Seattle, WA.
I got into the industry just by my mom making me care about the things i wore. At first i didn’t understand what she meant but as i got older the connections i started to build with these brands & companies that i love till this day made all started to make sense. You really have to love what you wear. Clothing is one of the best ways to express yourself. All over the world people use style to express how they feel. And thats the part of clothing i really fell in love with. A person being able to dress however they want any day of the week. It’s such a beautiful thing.
I got into event coordination just working with friends. We wanted to create a good time off of our names & make some money while doing it. Once i actually figured out what i wanted out of this i partnered with one of my best friends & now we host the best R&B Party on the Westcoast.
Basics creates the essentials for EVERYONE. There is no scale upon where we can go so everything is essential. The highest quality products we can create & a step by step process with us on the details of the product.
We’re proud to just be apart of the community. The people we inspire mean everything to us. We keep going all because of the support & love we get from the gang. We show love & they show us love back.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Just to be happy. I want to create products & have a team i can put in position to be rich forever.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Just seeing people react to your work, good or bad. I think you learn a lot about yourself when you get feedback on your work. The type of artist YOU want to be.
