We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bailey Tollan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bailey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I completed was a memorial piece for a friend’s cherished family dog who had recently passed away. She commissioned me to create a drawing to honor and remember their beloved pet. Working on this project was incredibly special to me, as it required a deep level of trust to be chosen for such a significant task. It was not only an honor to contribute to their memorial, but it also marked one of my first commissions as an artist.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a self-taught visual artist based in Kamloops, BC. Art has always been my primary means of self-expression. Through my work, I aim to evoke emotions and tell compelling stories. My distinctive style blends the influences of anime and cartoons from my youth with a deep appreciation for graffiti and street art. Although drawing is my main focus, I’ve recently ventured into painting, sculpting, and even taxidermy. I’m excited to continue growing, exploring new mediums, and pushing creative boundaries.
In recent years, I’ve started participating in art shows to showcase and sell my work. It’s deeply gratifying to see that people appreciate my art enough to purchase it. Since then, I’ve undertaken several commissions and look forward to taking on more opportunities in the future.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In a time where AI can generate virtually any content imaginable, it’s essential to prioritize hiring and funding for artists and creatives. By doing so, we not only support unique artistic expression but also ensure the cultivation of original and innovative ideas. As a society, we can support artists by purchasing their work, attending exhibitions or performances, and sharing their art.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to channel emotions into a work of art that can be shared with others. It’s a profound release of feelings and a way to connect with an audience. I truly hope that my art and journey can be an inspiration to other new and young artists, that would be the ultimate reward.
