We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bailey Ness. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bailey below.
Bailey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
My company’s niche is Social Media Marketing and Management. It’s certainly a unique industry- the use of social media is relatively new when you consider the history of advertising, so it is growing at exponential rates and constantly evolving. Trends, algorithms, and the way social media is used by producers and consumers change constantly, so my team members and I are always on our toes.
One of the biggest trends that I am seeing on TikTok and Instagram is the use of story-telling. Users on these platforms want to know and connect with brands and influencers, rather than just seeing photos and videos of them or their products. People are moved by personal stories and excited to support brands or brand ambassadors they can truly relate to. My team members and I tell our clients that the best way to grow their brand is to create rapport and a sense of connection with their viewers via their social media channels.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Bailey Ness, and I founded my social media marketing agency, Nesscessity, in May 2020. My education and early career background was in fashion marketing, but as the effects of Covid became apparent in the world of business, I saw how important it would become that brands from ALL industries had a strong online presence. My company works with businesses to build a loyal community of customers through organic social media. Outside of work, I am an avid runner- I competed collegiately in track and cross country, and continue to race marathons today. I am so lucky to have found a way to take my competitive spirit, high energy, team-oriented mindset, and love for leadership into a career that helps businesses to succeed.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I think everyone was affected by the onset of the pandemic in 2020. I was finishing up graduate school and had plans to work in the fashion industry in New York. My job offer was retracted and I was faced with A LOT of ambiguity. I didn’t want to settle for a job that didn’t excite me about leaving school and starting “real life,” but I had never even considered what I would do if my plans suddenly disintegrated.
I interviewed for multiple positions, but when I would hang up the phone or Zoom call, none of them left me with that “this is it” feeling. The build up to my ‘pivot’ was gradual, but when it happened, it happened at full speed. I stopped seeking out opportunities, and with the encouragement of my incredible family and friends, I made my own! I moved to Denver, and started my social media marketing company with only a handful of clients and no guarantees for success. It grew fast, and I’ve never looked back. In hindsight, losing that dream job offer was the best thing that could have happened for my career.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
It might sound a little counterintuitive, but the most effective way I’ve grown my clientele is actually by being MORE selective about businesses that I take on. One of the most important skills I’ve gained in the business world is how to say “no” to opportunities that aren’t a good fit for my team and me. When we partner with clients or businesses that we share passions or values with, it’s naturally reflected in our work. As a result, our clients reap the benefits, and future clients see great quality marketing that makes them want to seek out our skills.
