We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bad Guy Ocean. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bad Guy Ocean below.
Hi Bad Guy Ocean, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Absolutely! I always knew a regular 9-5 job was not for me. I never lasted more than a year at one. Not because I was a horrible worker, ironically I was always a good employee. Being confined to a small space, clocking in just to do the same thing was mentally exhausting and draining. After a while some artist tend to lose interest or momentum in their passion cause their job took so much out of them. An artist who can’t create often leads to depression. Deciding to focus on my craft full time has its downs, but I get to do what I love which is create. Life is short, I’d rather bet on myself doing what I love than having to slave away at a dead end job that would replace at the drop of a dime.
Bad Guy Ocean, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Ocean and I’m originally from New York. Harlem to be exact. I always loved to write as a child but I first started writing poetry, which eventually transitioned into writing music. Working in reality tv put even closer proximity to the music industry and smaller local artist. Fast forward to 2024. After experiencing a traumatic loss, I needed something to help cope mentally. So I decided I was going to take risk and follow my true dreams as an artist. When it comes to my brand. I’m about celebrating and embracing being my true authentic self. I want to encourage people to be proud of the things that make them unique.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me the most rewarding part of being an artist is being able to entertain and connect with people through my music while also sharing my story and who I am. Music has always been therapeutic for me. Now when I write songs it’s also like a form of self therapy. People love being able to relate to a song that matches however they’re feeling in that moment. I love being able to connect with people through something I created.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the idea that in order for you to be successful the people closest to you have to be your biggest supporters, I personally stopped expecting friends and family, or just people close to me to support my music .There was a point in time where i obsessed over that. But once I started getting feedback and repost from complete the strangers. I realized if I wanted to really succeed and go far I needed to focus on growing an audience, a solid foundation of supporters. Strangers have no obligation to like or support anything I do, which means if they do it’s 100% cause they genuinely like it.
