We recently connected with Baby Paul and have shared our conversation below.
Baby Paul, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I started my career at age 24, I transitioned from a day job working at a hospital in New York City while developing music with up and coming artists, when my 1st commercially released recording came out back in 1995, I quit my day job and never looked back ever since.
Baby Paul, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Baby Paul, a NYC based music producer (formerly of the 90’s hip-hop production collective, “Da Beatminerz”) I started my career producing 3 songs on the classic album, “Da Shinin” by Brooklyn based music group, Smif=N-Wessun.
I have maintained my career over the years by staying creatively consistent, adapting to the ever evolving music landscape and by maintaining a strong network to release new music in the current digital age of the music industry climate.
I am most proud of earning a grammy Nomination, and RIAA certified Gold and Platinum albums from having collaborated with hip-hop music legends, Nas and AZ.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in today’s music industry climate is to maintain artistic integrity, never losing sight of where I came from at the start of my career and to do smart business utilizing the power of the internet in today’s digital age.
As an independent businessman and co-owner of music label company – XMG Llc in collaboration with my business partner in Los Angeles – Antonio Velaz, we focus on discovering new talent to introduce into the marketplace and create new careers that have staying power offering timeless music.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the acknowledgment and appreciation from true music fans who have followed my career from day one – receiving messages and online mentions from fans on the anniversary of songs or albums I produced music for recognizing the work and highlighting it.
I am also humbled by the opportunity to pay it forward by helping others to create music and make a name for themselves – being recognized as the next generation of talented recording artists, music producers, mix engineers.
