We were lucky to catch up with Babi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Babi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Well, I always say I started for real in 2019 when I got into SAE Institute to study Audio Technology, I was 28 years old and the way my life was turning around during that time was giving me the courage I needed to finally go for it, I definitely had that moment of “if I don’t do it now…” and honestly, I want no “what if” in my life.
However, I remember when I was 20 years old back in Venezuela going to the Nurse School, knowing my mind and heart was somewhere else. I remember it was a life/country situation where I gave priority to a “serious career” with a steady income, but also, I though of music artists as something special and I just didn’t see myself as special, time passes and you never give it chance.
Nowadays, I don’t really care about the start point, because all that matter is what you do right now; what you’re bringing to the community, what you leave on someone’s heart. Who knows where I’d be today if I had decided to study music instead of nursing, but I know my purpose still remains, having a purpose as an artist just makes everything easier.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My introduction in the music industry game was from level 1, no money, no contacts, nothing lol
I started as a sound engineer, doing internships and pretty much going through every step in the latter. For me, I just needed to start somewhere, and recording engineer was the first door that open.
Little by little (patiently), I got more into production, but also, learning the business, so the past few years I’ve been developing not only my music, but also my business and brand. That’s when I created my website, I started by selling beats, but then, I decided to bring something more, because as I work with all kind of industry professional, I realized there’s a big community of amazing talented Independent Artists struggling to make a living out of their art.
Thus, I started creating marketing and business resources to help artists release music that bring them real opportunities, revenue and grow a professional career. Right now, my signature product is the Pro Independent Artist Blueprint, it’s an online course of 4 modules that covers branding, marketing, project release, monetization and music business.
Working on this has been a really nice venture, mostly because of the feedback. I must admit, it’s really satisfactory seeing the improvement on all the artists that have taken the course, and their comments make my day. It motivates me to keep putting the spotlight on Independent Artists
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I still have my internal debate with this, but one of the biggest lesson I had to unlearn was the obsessive hustle mentality, the idea of working 24/7 in order to make it. I used to think that I couldn’t rest, like I didn’t deserve it since I haven’t made it yet.
That became counterproductive, I couldn’t focus on finishing one project, too many ideas but no execution. I was already tired before I even started. Adding to that, I was going through a very unstable emotional and mental time in my life; so no rest, no sleep, constant desperation and impatience, just led to depression and anxiety.
But it’s not until you hit that breakdown point, that you make decisions to change your life. And I had decided that I was going to enjoy the process, can’t rush the process, actually, it’s a lifetime journey and I wanna live it healthy.
So yes, work on your craft and business, but also work on your body, mind and spirit.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I find artists as one of the most noble roles in society. Of course nowadays, people mostly see the glam, stars, flashlights, luxury, etc. But that’s the industry.
When you take away the industry, you have a person who serves as a vessel to bring comfort to somebody’s heart and mind, and this is what take the most out of art.
As a music artist, I’m supposed to take what’s out there, sounds, notes, chords, etc. and putting together a peace of work where somebody can be safe to feel whatever they’re feeling at the moment. Sometimes, we do this despite what we’re going through, or even in contrast with.
I find that rewarding, being another instrument in this world.
