We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful B. WalterWill. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with B. below.
B., appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I think this novel, The Yellow Pinto has a purpose of being a really meaningful project because there is a lot of realism, or what can be referred to as dirty realism. I wanted the storytelling to be fast and somewhat connected so that readers are feeling some of the anxiety, pain and pleasure the story reveals. This novel was definitely not easy to write, neither was living this life.
Being an addict leaves a person in many compromising positions. I can’t say for sure if I have overcome the challenges of these diseases however, I am trying to cope with the issues and the words are my way of coming clean and getting honest with myself. I truly believe this is consequential because anyone is capable of telling a story and everyone has a story to tell. I find it encouraging that there are outlets for a person to express yourself and writing is just one of the mediums.
B., love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I think it is very important for people to take risk in their lives and careers. I acknowledge that I would not be able to live without risk in my life. The Yellow Pinto, my novel is about gambling, alcohol, drugs and sex. It confronts unapologetically these issues.
Gambling is a neighborhood often ignored or overlooked, but in my experience is just as dangerous as any other disease. Almost all advertising in the media has a tentacle of gambling attached to it. The biggest sporting events such as the Super Bowl/World Cup/World Series has billions of dollars wagered every year on the outcome of these events. What is being withheld or ignored is that weekly, every slot machine, sporting event, fantasy sport, and card game is actually gaining in popularity.
I chose to intertwine my relationship with my father who was very close to me, with our love for gambling. When you read The Yellow Pinto, you will see it is in many ways our form of communication. This disease has had grave results with my relationships, self-worth and career opportunities. The escapades in between are why I kept running and writing.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Yes, absolutely.
In fact, there are several pivotal moments in the book where any reader would think, “What is wrong with this person?”. Beginning with my father and repeatedly happening to myself after many times of failure, lost relationships, opportunities wasted, other lives affected and endless anguishing moments, one would think that when is will this crazy idiot finally get his act together?!
To be honest, I am still in a constant struggle to do so. I have chosen other avenues to direct my energies for a more selfless existence and to be of service to others. I realized the first step to any of this is getting myself correct. That being said, it has been a hell of a ride and I hope through self-improvement it will keep getting better.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There are so many influences that have inspired me in different ways. In my case, yes there are authors, books, films, music that I have gained influence from. Without people, real people & human-kind (kind to humans) around you and how they intertwine into your story, that’s where the real impact comes from.
I think of all of the colorful characters, meaningful relationships, and some not so meaningful…I still recollect the impact of them that I have encountered before and during writing this book, and the ones that I have met after. Our lives are nothing without the people in it.
I think the best experience is to get out there, live your life and not be afraid to interact with people even in situations and conditions that are uncomfortable to you. My biggest growth has been from taking a risk by letting people into my life. Sometimes it ends well. Sometimes it ends in tears. To feel joy and pain is to know that you exist.
