We were lucky to catch up with B. Taylor recently and have shared our conversation below.

B., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?

This is more of a “cartel” success story… About a year ago, I began mentoring a talented young MUA, who joined The Beauty Cartel. At the time, she knew that she wanted to be a full-time MUA, but had no idea how to start. My staff and I helped her create a logo design, published her website, revamped her social media platforms and arranged a photo shoot for headshots and to start her portfolio. I was honored to deliver her first paying clients.

In a years time, she has expanded her brand forming her own bridal make up team. She says that she attributes her growing success to the jump start, mentorship and connections she’s made by joining my beauty family. I am beyond grateful, knowing that The Beauty Cartel helped this young artist realize her full potential and start her path to success. This is my wish for beauty professionals joining the family and stories like this one is what keeps me going.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I’m B.taylor, Assistant Director of Makeup for Atlantic City Fashion Week and owner of a nationwide beauty referral agency called, The Beauty Cartel , which was established in 2021. I am a Philadelphia born, published Makeup Artist with over 12 years of experience in large bridal parties, runway shows, stage plays, print, TV and film production. My makeup looks have been featured in Elle Magazine, Bridal Guide Magazine, various runway shows in multiple cities, and on globally broadcasted shows on AMC . I organize and host networking events in major cities for black business owners in the beauty industry and more.

I have a passion for guiding new beauty professionals through their process. Starting my career in high school, I feel beyond privileged along with my ACFW family to speak with cosmetology students at various high schools to help prepare them for their future in this competitive industry.

In 2021 I started The Beauty Cartel to expand my brand beyond my tri-state area. I began booking flights to different cities, attending networking events; Earn Your Leisure and Invest Fest to name a couple. During my flights and stays , I would look my best and introduce my brand to everyone I encountered. With this, my clientele expanded with people from all over the country. As being in two places at once is impossible, I started scouting for fresh cartel members in new cities. I have invested time and resources to seek out the top beauty professionals in the industry in each city the cartel is now located. All beauty cartel MUAS, hairstylists, lash technicians, wardrobe specialists and estheticians are personally vetted by me. They are evaluated for professionalism and artistry technique as my clients expect top quality services.

Realizing that the knowledge and connections I made through networking was the key to my growing success. I made a decision to do my part by organizing my own events to help artists make the necessary connections to achieve their goals.

In 2022 The Beauty Cartel hosted two “Makeup&Sip” networking events, bringing each cities’ top MUAS together to meet, collaborate and exchange success tools. We also hosted a networking event for black business owners of all industries, entitled “A Hustlers Gathering “ held annually on MLK Day weekend. These events were held in different cities from the east to the west coast inspiring business owners to celebrate entrepreneurship, and to keep going!

This year, I am excited to announce that I will be partnering with MAC Cosmetics teaching a master class at a Phoenix AZ location. I will also be releasing my book, B.TAYLOR’S 8 STEP GUIDE TO FASTER MAKEUP APPLICATION. The Beauty Cartel will also be bringing more Makeup&Sip events to a city near you.

My personal services go beyond makeup application. I also offer my clients, personal makeup shopping, One on one makeup training, and traveling consulting. I offer New Beauty Cartel members additional clientele, social media, financial/business mentorship, Discounted beauty products and tools. Discounted packages from our award winning associated photographers and videographers are available to all beauty professionals who join The Beauty Cartel.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

I found this very important to address because I frequently share with my clients, artists and followers to keep going and stick to your plan, no matter what! However it’s crucial to know when to make adjustments to improve the plan or cut something out of the plan that’s hindering it. I recently had to make a major adjustment to my plan by cutting ties with a long term business associate. This change would leave me to pick up more of the load, research, and learn new skills to fulfill the open role. I stayed focused and used the tools I received from speakers at the networking events I’ve attended. I kept going with strength and resilience, knowing that the pivot, though unexpected and at the time hurtful was necessary for my growth and success.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

A lesson that I had to unlearn was believing that the people who are most successful have had some type of luck or advantage over everyone else. And that sayings like “ you create your own destiny “ were just cliché. I have now learned that those sayings are literal instructions to success. And everyone is capable of the same level of achievements.

Construct your plan, adapt the habits of the people you view successful and the universe and everything in it will adjust to that plan.

Start becoming the person you want to be and the rest will fall into place.
