We recently connected with B. Octavious Sims and have shared our conversation below.
B. Octavious , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew that I wanted to be apart of the entertainment industry at a very early age. Maybe around 10 or 11 I remember walking my bike to the top of hill to turn into my grandparents driveway. I would walk with my bike to the top and then put on my little sunglasses and put my Walkman headphones over my ears, press play (Regulate- By Warren G & Nate Dogg) I really loved the beat to that song. After I would press play, I would then get on my bike and fly down the hill. Just the thrill of coming down that hill with my sunglasses on and music in my ears made me felt like just for a short moment that I was in a movie. My grandparents would sometimes be outside and my grand dad would be so tickled at how fast I would fly down that hill. I know it sounds crazy 😜 but I would repeat that method until I would get tired. So that was the moment that I knew I wanted to entertain others and be apart of the entertainment industry. Also another moment would be when my mom bought me my first VHS movie (Home Alone).. I would watch that movie over and over thinking I could play that role, the black Kevin McCallister 😂😂
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As I mentioned earlier I knew I wanted to entertain and be apart of the entertainment industry but I still didn’t know what I actually wanted to do in the industry. I know that sounds crazy doesn’t 😂 but seriously I knew I wanted to be in the entertainment industry but didn’t know if I really wanted to act, sing or what. i joined the drama club at school and I actually loved it . But after graduation and then college I was back at square one. So I started writing songs and even going into a few friends studio to sing a few hooks and even recorded my own 6 songs cd. But I quickly figured out (After Listening To My CD) that music wasn’t for me. So that’s when I knew I wanted to act. Well by this time Greg (The Griggs of SimGriggs) was singing at church events, weddings, programs. He also wanted to act as well so after we did a few auditions here and there and didn’t get callbacks we decided to create our own acting jobs. I remember it like it was yesterday, it July of 2011 and we sat in the pool house thinking of ways to creat our own acting jobs. So we decided to write a stage play, cast it, act in it and produce it . So that’s how we got started and we did several stage places before we went on to write, produce and direct short films and now features.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Over the course over the years we (SimGriggs Productions)have some bad film crew & editor experience. Meaning that we have paid for something to be one way but the outcome was a totally different way. We have also encountered once of a editor we hired that was jealous of the success of the project and tried to sabotage it. The sad thing that really hurt us is that it was our own kind of people if that makes sense. I thank God that we don’t hold grudges and that we have forgiving hearts. Notice I said forgive but will never forget and will never hire you again. So throughout those difficult times we still pushed on and still continued to give other editors a chance and that really illustrates our resilience.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To see a script you have written come to life as the actors and actresses give their all to that particular character.
