We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful B J. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with B below.
B, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
God gave me the idea of my business when I was young and in church. I heard the story of the mustard seed and I wanted to see how big it was and how much faith I needed. When I saw how small it was, I knew then that would be the name of my brand and what I will represent. I finished college but couldn’t get a job so one day I decided to finally start the ideas that God had given me all these years. I started with pocket tees and made clothes for myself. I used instagram to promote and show my creations. It wasn’t long before I started to receive order request. I am still to this day researching everyday for my brand and learning new things. There is so much to learn and I have learned so much. My progress and what I have learned is why I am where I am today and I am excited for all ill learn in the future.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am BJ. A fashion designer out of Houston Tx. My brand is Mustard Seed Customs based off of the scripture in the Bible of having faith the size of a mustard seed and anything will be possible for you. We sell custom made clothing for Women, Men, and children. The quality, style, and custom made factor of this brand is what makes it stand out and loved by many. I am proud of the message the brand gives. Believe in yourself and your dreams will come true.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I started my business not knowing much at all but knowing what I wanted to do and I was ready to start so I started. To fund my business, I used my personal money to build and grow my business. When I sold a product, I used the profit from that money to get more to create. I was hired not too long after starting my brand as a teacher and real estate agent and used my salary to take my brand even further. I funded myself and built my brand while learning about owning a business.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for building my brand has been wearing my brand out and receiving compliments or questions. My brand is noticed alot and when I am asked about it, I make sure to tell everyone about the mustard seed. I leave with an order and most importantly I leave them with words of encouragement and to believe in theirselves.
