B. Dacia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I came up with the idea while I was transitioning to a vegan lifestyle. I didn’t want to eat animals anymore, not because I didn’t like the flavors I just didn’t want to hurt them anymore. I started researching plant based alternatives to meat and the market was almost non-existent except for burgers. So, I started learning about how to make “Seitan” a wheat-based plant protein. And, from there the company started.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my business on the love for animals, the planet and people. I went Vegan around 17 years ago after my doctor told me that my cholesterol levels were in the danger zone. He wanted to put me on medications and I prefer more natural remedies. My research started and I slowly started eliminating animal products from my diet. During this process is when I started researching how to make my own plant based meats. My first accomplishment was a “Grillable” steak, which then evolved into “Grillable” Jackfruit Beaf Ribz, Deli Meats, Grillable Chickun Filets and Pork Chops. What sets our products apart is we do not use fillers, additives, food coloring or preservatives. We make all our plant based meats fresh weekly and slice, package then sell them on site and across the country through our website. I am most proud of the amount of people that say to me ” I never knew vegan food could taste so good!”. We also give back to the community through food programs and all our food waste goes to an animal sanctuary. So a win/win everywhere you turn!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started Honest Pastures in 2018. I was actually in Idaho when COVID hit. I had been hired to come out and teach a community about Plant Based Eating. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to get home, how my business was going to function etc. I immediately took to the internet and offered FREE nationwide shipping and delivery. I offered hands free delivery/ Pick Up through sanitized coolers, disposable gloves and masks. My business actually boomed. My current and new customers were delighted to see the amount of care that went into keeping them safe and fed.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I started this business with $600 of cashed in awarded stock from the company I was working for. I worked Full Time in the automotive industry 60 hours a week. After work and on my day off I would focus 100% on growing Honest Pastures. I never had a day off for 4 years. In 2018 I decided to sit my full time job and dive heard first into my business and have not looked back!
