We recently connected with Aziz Halabi and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Aziz thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Hello everyone! I want to start by expressing my gratitude for this wonderful opportunity to share my thoughts and feelings about my journey so far. Thank you to anyone who is reading this.
I discovered my passion for photography later in my 20s, which just goes to show that it’s never too late to learn. When COVID hit, I took the time to reflect on what I truly wanted to pursue, and photography had been calling to me for quite a while. One sunny day, I decided, “Why not?” I invested in a Nikon D810 through an eBay auction, won the bid, and embarked on my path to self-taught photography.
As my skills developed, I felt inspired to take the next step and founded my own business, Musaweron. This venture has allowed me to share my passion with others, a photography venture dedicated to immortalizing moments in time and space through my craft.
I’m not in a rush to speed up this process; I believe everything is unfolding at the right pace. I’ve noticed significant growth in my understanding of composition, lighting, and post-production techniques, all of which have elevated my skills in this craft.
In my view, composition is the cornerstone of impactful photography. You might wonder, what exactly does composition entail? It encompasses techniques like leading lines and the rule of thirds, guiding the viewer’s eye and enhancing the visual harmony of the image. A well-composed photograph elevates the subject, allowing it to shine within the frame and resonate with the audience. Mastering composition transforms a simple snapshot into a compelling work of art.
The biggest challenge I’ve faced has been dealing with extreme lighting conditions—too much sunlight or not enough. Finding that perfect balance in ISO and aperture to make my subjects shine has been a learning experience, but I view these challenges as valuable opportunities for growth.
Aziz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Born in Seattle and raised in Kuwait, I come from a rich tapestry of cultures—my father hails from Lebanon, while my mother is from Tunisia. This diverse background has fostered a long-standing appreciation for the arts, particularly theatre. It was this love for creativity that ultimately led me to the world of photography, a journey that has truly been a blessing.
As a photographer, I offer a wide range of services, including wedding, portrait, event, commercial, and food photography. Recently, I’ve found that one of the biggest challenges my clients face is showcasing their culinary offerings in a way that truly captivates potential customers. Many restaurants often lack high-quality images that do justice to their menu items, and I’ve dedicated myself to addressing this need. Through my lens, I strive to elevate their dishes, turning simple food photography into a visual feast that entices and excites.
One of my proudest moments in this journey occurred recently when I had the opportunity to work alongside artists I deeply admire and respect. Collaborating with these talented individuals has reinforced my belief that I am on the right path, one filled with inspiration and creativity.
My mission in photography centres around the belief that these images will be immortalized in time and space, cherished for years to come. I strive to evoke emotions and convey beauty in each photograph, allowing my clients to relive their memories long after the moment has passed. Through my work, I aim to create a lasting legacy that preserves the essence of each experience, transforming fleeting moments into timeless reminders that resonate across generations.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Making sure I don’t fall into the trap of believing that I have mastered my craft in any way, knowing that my journey into the photography world is one that will continue to test my knowledge and skills while building on what I have already learned, in other words there’s always room for growth.
Meanwhile during the practice, making sure that I give every project I’m entrusted with all the attention and respect it rightfully deserves.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Knowing that I’m a part of an event that has so much more meaning beyond my own comprehension in people’s lives, after a while you just see yourself as a photographer for so-and-so’s wedding, however for them, this will be a once in a lifetime experience (unless they marry again) in a perfect world setting of course.
In other words being a part of a moment in time that brings so many different emotions, encapsulated in a digital format for years to come, hence why my mission with my photography is to immortalize moments in time and space, and as a creative artist, I get to be a part of those moments wholeheartedly.
