We recently connected with Azarya Samtani and have shared our conversation below.
Azarya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Straight out of college I started working immediately, interning at CNN, Cartoon Network, and then getting a full-time job at a creative agency in Atlanta. After working for a year in Atlanta, I decided to move back to my home town Jakarta, Indonesia, and build my life there. I started by taking on freelance gigs here and there to begin earning in my home country. I knew well before moving to Jakarta that there was a particular person I wanted to be mentored by. Soon after interviewing for a job with her, she offered me the position of Art Director at a body skincare start-up company called Dew It. From day one I had a plan. I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I moved back and who I wanted to work with, however, I definitely did not expect to be an Art Director of a start up company that soon! 2 years later, growing and learning at Dew It, launching 7 products with them, winning awards together and growing their social media page with them to having 24k followers, I decided it was time for a new chapter in my life, that’s when I began joining my family’s company in the film industry, yet another completely different field.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After working in the creative world for 4 years, I decided to join my family’s company in the film industry, Sky Films. Sky Films is a Production House that has made various web series for Vidio.com out of which 2 of the titles are now in preparation for Season 2 – Scandal & Virgin Mom. Our vision is to make series that are not only entertaining but also has a strong social message to it.
I joined as their Creative Associate, being in the entertainment industry world was completely different and brand new to me, but I knew that when I was ready and felt like I had something valuable to bring to the table, I would join my family business and learn the ropes. In my own creative way, never leaving behind my designer side.
As a Creative Associate, I am involved and responsible for all the steps from story concepting, to post-production editing. All the steps I did not even know existed! Reading over 50 pages of script writing over and over again until its perfected and approved with our partner company, gathering the right crew to shoot & film, assisting in wardrobe selection to make sure our vision is executed, and seeing rough cuts as they shoot, assisting in post-production editing and overseeing the editing drafts. You might be wondering how my design background plays into my current role. Well you see, with the background I have studied and roles ive worked in, I have been able to have an eye for all things creative. Whether it’s seeing and analyzing the way a scene is filmed, directing photoshoots or even website designing. All that I have been part of has helped train me to have a sharp eye in the creative world. Placed myself in positions I would have never even thought I could fit into.
At Dew It I was involved in their social media feed plans & stories. Today at Sky Films I am leading a social media team, talking to them about trending reels and how we should guide the cast to create content with us to help grow not only our social media page but reach the correct audience for our Web Series.
Trust the path and journey you are on, and believe that everything you do will take you to exactly where you are meant to be. Simply trust the process.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
That’s a simple question. there is nothing more rewarding than seeing your work and designs go live, seeing others appreciate your work, and noticing the small little details.
From working on drafts, sketches and planning to get to see the product or vision come to life exactly how you pictured it. There is no better reward or feeling as an artist than that moment you get to see it come to life right in front of you.
Whether it is working on a Dew It packaging and seeing it come to life or working on a storyline and watching it blossom into the series you imagined it would be.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Instagram and the power of Social Media. By doing what I love, creating content, and having fun with social media, I have gotten many brands and people reaching out to me, wanting to work together to create some content for their brand or help them create a brand from scratch and handle their social media page completely.
I love creating reels with transitions and having fun with them to make something in my style. Just by doing what I love I have captured many people’s attention, wanting me to create reels for their brands too.
Keep doing what you love and it is bound to work out in your favor, trust me.
