We recently connected with Azalea Chan and have shared our conversation below.
Azalea , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Photography makes me incredibly happy; I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else. I’ve had a regular job in the past, but it just wasn’t for me. What I love most about being a business owner is the freedom to create my own schedule and be my own boss. There are definitely times when the idea of a regular job crosses my mind, especially during the rough patches. But even then, I wouldn’t trade this for anything else. The joy I get from capturing moments and making a difference in people’s lives through my photos is what keeps me going.
Azalea , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Azalea, and I am the owner of Azalea Chan Photography. Photography has always been my passion, and it’s something that truly lights me up inside. I started taking photography seriously in August 2023, and it’s been an incredible journey ever since. My focus is on capturing genuine moments for families, couples, and individuals, making them feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera. My goal is to create timeless images that people will cherish forever.
What sets me apart is my approach to each session—I strive to create a relaxed environment where my clients can truly be themselves. I believe that the best photos come from moments of genuine connection, laughter, and spontaneity. My clients often tell me that my positive energy and bright smile make their experience enjoyable and stress-free, which is exactly what I aim for.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the growth I’ve seen in my business in such a short time, and the relationships I’ve built with my clients and fellow creatives in the community. I’m always looking to support others, collaborate with other photographers, and make new friends in the industry.
For me, it’s not just about taking beautiful photos—it’s about creating an experience that leaves my clients feeling happy and connected. My journey has just begun, and I’m excited to see where it takes me as I continue to grow and make memories with the amazing people I get to work with.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I first started taking photography seriously in August 2023, I faced a lot of self-doubt and uncertainty. There were times when things didn’t go as planned—sessions that didn’t turn out the way I envisioned or moments when I felt overwhelmed trying to balance everything as a new business owner. One of the biggest challenges was when I accidentally double-booked a wedding. It was a stressful moment, but I realized that my resilience lies in finding solutions, even in the toughest situations. I reached out to a trusted photographer friend to cover one of the weddings for me, ensuring that both clients were taken care of.
This experience reminded me that it’s okay to lean on my support network when needed and that resilience isn’t just about pushing through on my own but also about being resourceful and adaptable. It taught me that no matter the setbacks, I have the determination to keep going and grow from each experience.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I started building my social media presence for Azalea Chan Photography, I focused on being authentic and sharing my passion for photography. I posted consistently, showcasing not just my work but also the behind-the-scenes moments that give a glimpse into my process. Engaging with my audience has been a big part of my growth—I respond to comments, interact with other photographers, and make an effort to connect with my followers on a personal level.
One piece of advice I would give to anyone starting to build their social media presence is to stay true to who you are. Let your personality shine through in your posts and captions because people connect with authenticity. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out and engage with others in your community; building genuine relationships will help you grow in a more meaningful way. Lastly, consistency is key—post regularly and keep showing up, even when it feels like you’re not seeing immediate results. It all adds up over time!
