We recently connected with Ayrica Walker and have shared our conversation below.
Ayrica , appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career
I would like to see all trades back in the school system. Also, adding real life courses in to the school system so the youth learn how to navigate real life once they graduate from high school.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up in the industry as my dad is a master electrician. I was a huge sneaker head growing up and in order for me to get the newest shoe I had to work with my dad to make extra money and that how I started in the industry. From there it became my summer job and my job on school breaks. After high school I went to college to study physical education to be an elementary school PE teacher. Realizing in college I didn’t love the school aspect , and the passion wasn’t there I moved in a different direction. I went to look for work and was hired at an electrical company. I knew I liked the field and enjoyed working with my hands. I knew at that time I truly fell in love with the craft.
I do a lot of repair work on residential and commercial properties. I love seeing people fall in love with their space again. I like the transformation process of watching the smallest item change the entire room ambiance.
My business encompasses all electrical item. From light fixtures, sockets to huge panel changes. No job is to small . No job is to large.
What makes me most proud was being able to start my company from scratch and watch my own growth as a business owner. I spent 15 years working for a company before I decided to take a leap and work for myself and it has been a scary yet rewarding transition.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients has been word of mouth since the moment I started.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being a minority owned company. I am a woman in a male dominated industry which stands out the most.
